I can't really tell a story this long here, but I figure anyone in the #dnd or #ttrpg community might enjoy this puzzle I ran last week that made my players hate me /hj
Thread 1: 🧵I just pulled off what may have been my favourite D&D puzzle of all time. Party walked into a large chamber with a couple feet of sand covering the floor, a projected illusion of a desert on the walls, and a basin in the center of the room in front of eight nearly identical pedestals, each with an indentation on the top. Inside the basin was an ever-swirling eddy of water, with eight strings of script spinning inside it. The goal is to place them into the pedestals in the correct order. Thread 2: 🧵 The strings, in the correct order, are as follows: 1. It should be clear now what must be done. 2. Not a soul feels for you as intensely as I. 3. Legends tell that your spirit’s flame has been extinguished. 4. Nothing I say will be news to you. 5. The roads twist and turn, but still they must be trod. 6. We are led by lights far too bright to see. 7. So much I wish to say, but with which words? 8. Perhaps it will be you who saves me. Thread 3: 🧵 One player had Comprehend Languages up and, with a successful intelligence check, realized that each pair of these strings, translated into Elvish, rhymes. Attempting to put a string into the wrong pedestal would cause a spot on the wall in front of it to shoot out a random effect from the Wand of Wonder. This puzzle can be solved through simple trial and error, but I tried to leave a steady set of clues to help them figure it out without being TOO obvious. Thread 4: 🧵 It took my party an hour and a half of talking it through and trying (and failing) different strings in different pedestals, but they succeeded in the end, and when it was all solved, a simple tune filled the air. A tune that, with a successful History check, two players were able to recognize. A tune that, to the chagrin of many, any starting lutist is eager to learn and show off to all who will listen. Thread 5: The way out of the puzzle finally opened up, and I said to the party, "Congratulations. You have solved the Wall of Wonder." One of the players, to whom I'm married, wants a divorce. /J dnd Thread 6: Giving credit where credit is due, this puzzle was inspired by/adapted from a puzzle my friend Lavender came up with, in which our characters found similarly modified lyrics and needed to use them to figure out the secret pass phrase: "Anyway, here's Wonderwall."
