8 years is nothing for a couch and 10 years is nothing for a closet. My sliding door closet became useless after a few years as it didn’t have enough structure and bent, meaning the doors didn’t slide any more.

And all this is useless when your business model is fast fashion for furniture. Countless amounts of particle board is disposed every year because of that.
Their compact packaging allows them lesser costs for storage and bigger profits because people don’t worry if it’s going to fit in their car.

random unrelated anecdote: I’m not in the US, but I found an old pack of firecrackers and I have no idea how to dispose of them. I asked at a local recycling center that takes some dangerous waste. I even asked a local company that deals with chemical waste and no one has an idea.
