As a writing professor, I agree good writing is definitely downstream of clear thinking. It’s also why multiple drafts help a writer deepen and clarify their ideas. People tend to think writing is a cup in which we pour our ideas into, but writing is its own kind of thinking.

I once had a student angry bc they argued in an essay that people living in New Orleans could have out walked Hurricane Katrina, so didn’t need government assistance, I gave them an F. They complained to the director who 100% backed me up. She still would today but many profs don’t have that.

There was an article in The Guardian a few weeks back about how Gen Z find bookshops preferable to online shopping, and a key factor was that an algorithm will offer you 6000 books identical to the one you just finished whereas a bookseller will offer you three that are different but meet the vibe.

I offered the student the chance to revise, and had explained how I would even consider the argument were they able to find a credible source to support the claims. They were angry I wouldn’t give them a passing grade, so they complained to the director of comp, who backed me up completely.

I think it’s also that even asking a question and expecting an answer is demanding in an ugly and selfish way.
