having a big fancy wedding may seem regressive but the point of being legally recognised is just that - because it gives you a ton of legal advantages that flow into and out of social settings all the time. there's lots of ways to do it and, actually, legalising gay marriage specifically >

this can be observed from the opposite direction too - NZ gave de-facto relationships (together, acknowledged publicly as together) equal status in the law with marriages about 20 years ago and it's been pretty transformative socially in how non-married couples (and throuples) are treated

which frankly sucks, tbh! I work with lots of policy folk & (from the outside) it's a really intellectually challenging and interesting job imo.

oh, it was terrifying the first few (dozen) times, but it did get easier... and an absolutely essential professional skill is to be able to confidently express both ignorance and an ability to quickly learn, because that's what the job often requires

when I started law school I was in my mid-twenties, and one of the lawyers I worked with told me to never be afraid to speak up because the classroom was, in her words, a safer place to be wrong than real life. I think about that lots as I practice.

I take it back. That wasn't my only commentary. "I obviously didn't mean it when I said I wanted to kill them and it's outrageous that I'm being taken seriously," is a really common defence from people making death threats and it is reasonable for mods to ignore it given that this isn't a criminal >
