Like a bit of anime, 40k and gigs, old enough to think the 90's were a couple of years ago (he/him)

While it's impossible to improve on perfection, Rowntree's attempted it in 1933 by adding a clear wrapping and a jaunty blue ribbon.

Incredibly, this was its last appearance in the catalogues, although some say on dark nights at the Cocoa Works you can still hear the distant rustle of cellophane...

Yeah, that was their only single that really did anything chart-wise, Fader was off their previous album. It's just one of those songs that epitomises a time and place for me

Fader by Drugstore, absolute banger which lives rent-free in my head but no-one i know seems to remember

Aaah, cheers! That makes a lot more sense, I'd heard a lot about why people liked the first two and how they played, but not anything about how the third played beyond it being different and memes about backflipping terminators

As someone who was out of both the 40k and PC gaming loop when all three games came out and still hasn't played them I'm always fascinated by the hate DoW3 gets. It's so universally agreed that it's bad that I don't actually know why. It makes me tempted to just play it blind to find out 😅

It's a bit too lightweight and formulaic at the moment, it's enjoyable with some good visual gags and comic setups but that's about all. There's not much to set it apart yet, although having a musical episode was an interesting twist at this stage. Hoping it can change things up a bit next time

The rest of the comedy is from Nuku Nuku's classmates at school who are all various stereotypes (the spoiled rich girl, the budding scientist, the occult nut etc), they're a bit one-note but at least the series does try to give them a bit of screentime and development. Not always successfully though

A lot of the humour at the moment is from the Mishima corporation basically being a consumer goods manufacturer play acting at being an evil organisation. The 'secret call' running gag is great, and i like that only the company execs and Dr Kyusaku actually take them seriously. The setup is great

That was a fun bit of fluff! Lower production values than the OVA which is to be expected from a TV series, but sits nicely in the same kind of niche as more kid-friendly action series like Yatterman. Enjoyable and inoffensive if a little formulaic, with a slight twist on the original storyline

Week 30 - All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku TV vol 1: Keep the Peace on Earth!

Sticking with the comedy this time, another classic series that's been on the watch pile for ages but i never got around to! Sadly this is the ADV release of the TV series, not the infamous UK dubbed OVA release!

They can't resist dropping a few references in though, like C-Ko's father's spaceship, which is blatantly just Thunderbird 2

I like that they make fun of the fact the setting and story have completely changed, and possessed C-Ko is great too. My main gripe is the weird semi-romance subplot, which doesn't really work. However, overall it's great fun, the comedy and story is better and it's pretty enjoyable. Worth a look!

It has a much more cohesive story than the original OVA even if the production values seem a little lower, and it's much funnier with less reliance on references and A-Ko and B-Ko presented as more of a bickering comedy double act than before. There's some great sight gags and slapstick too
July 31, 2025 at 10:56 PM
Well, I needn't have worried about not being able to follow the story, as this is a straight sci-fi with no relation to the original OVA beyond the main characters! Now A-Ko and B-Ko are hunters on an alien planet and C-Ko is the heir of business conglomerate. There are space pirates and everything.

Week 29 - Project A-Ko: Uncivil Wars

I'm a week behind so got some catching up to do! Thought I'd watch the other Project A-Ko DVD I have, apparently the sequel OVAs have standalone stories so the fact that this is effectively volume 3 and I don't have volume 2 should hopefully not matter...

In the end it's fun but not as funny as it could have been, the dub doesn't help but some of its references are also pretty dated and C-Ko is pretty annoying too. However, it looks great, it's action-packed and it has some fantastically inventive sequences. All in all it was pretty enjoyable

The absolute chaos throughout is great, and the running gags do mostly land but I do wish they'd included the Japanese dub on the disc. This release is locked to English only and the dub is a little flat at times and doesn't match the energy of the visuals, which does impact the humour a bit
