A Complicated Woman by Rebecca Lucy Taylor (Self Esteem) arrived in the post today. This is the very first page which says “trans women are women. Kindly shut this book if you think that is up for debate.” This will be great.

This just arrived in the post. So that’s my weekend sorted.

I actually think I might reread book 2 first. I think this follows on immediately and I don’t remember it as well as I could. It did come out 6 years ago. Anyone else thinking the same? Anyway I have high hopes for this.

Trans academics, lawyers, word nerds, (I am not a lawyer but I do research about words and language) does anyone else think the definition of “biological sex” the judgement adopts (‘Terminology’ section) in para.7 of “the sex of a person at birth” is not consistently applied in para. 172? 🧵/1
Page 3 of the judgment with the Terminology section. I’ve highlighted para7: “We also use the expression "biological sex" which is used widely, including in the judgments of the Court of Session, to describe the sex of a person at birth, and we use the expression "certificated sex" to describe the sex attained by the acquisition of a GRC.” Page 51 of the judgement. I’ve highlighted para 172: “A certificated sex interpretation would cut across the definition of the protected characteristic of sex in an incoherent way. References to a "woman" and "women" as a group sharing the protected characteristic of sex would include all females of any age (irrespective of any other protected characteristic) and those trans women (biological men) who have the protected characteristic of gender reassignment and a GRC (and who are therefore female as a matter of law). The same references would necessarily exclude men of any age, but they would also exclude some (biological) women living in the male gender with a GRC (trans men who are legally male). The converse position would apply to references to "man" and "men" as a group sharing the same protected characteristic. We can identify no good reason why the legislature should have intended that sex-based groupings, rather than to the distinct group of (biological) women and girls (or men and boys) with their shared biology leading to shared disadvantage and discrimination faced by them as a distinct group.”

However in other work news I bought myself these truly excellent shoes with Xmas money after seeing them on a colleague so now I probably need to move jobs or something. (It’s ok I asked him if I could buy the same shoes as him which actually might make this story more embarrassing). They’re great.

I’m down south visiting my parents for early Christmas (Christmas part 1). My Mum @hayleyhumphrey.bsky.social made a @nigella.bsky.social chocolate cake topped with chocolate trees & penguins so it’s Christmassy. Apparently she made it especially for me because she keeps making it when I’m not here.

Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #565,566! Ok so this is fairly cringe but I sort of like the “certified Bluesky elder” badge. Maybe one day (many years from now please) I can have a “certified trans elder” badge. I’m not sure who would “certify” this. Maybe tomorrow’s trans youth.

That’s the rainbow Christmas tree up and as is tradition it features 6 dinosaurs and achievements for the year. This year was a couple of journal articles, a couple of poetry publications, a couple of journal articles featuring poems, and one article that was translated into French 🇫🇷 🐌 that’ll do.

This week I encountered a pretty room full of books and a nice view and this sign and it was a good time.

In today’s episode of sorting through the nonsense I own to move flat I’ve found a Philosophy Now magazine from 2008 with this important warning about email scams (which I can only assume were less common than they are today).
Email Scam Targets Academics Academics should beware: it appears that they are being targetted by an email fraud. A scam email, sent to university lecturers around the world, asks them to send in abstracts describing unpublished research. Falsely purporting to be from the publishing giant Elsevier, it promises that work will be printed in its journals and discussed at seminars organised globally by the company. The initial email doesn't mention money, but at least one academic who submitted a paper was later asked for a substantial handling fee. A spokeswoman for Elsevier said the company had reported the matter to the authorities but could not comment further as the case was still under investigation. It has posted a warning note on its website. It is feared that the spammers are seeking personal information as well as money.

I’m packing up to move flat. I’ve just hoovered a very old hold-all so we can use it. Inside it was full of glitter along with one mysterious key, a pure hmv card (their loyalty scheme that ended at least 4 years ago) & a hair tie (it’s been at least 8 years since we had long enough hair for this)

One of my jobs ends soon & I got an email called “FYI: You have a new journey - off boarding - resignation/end. Let’s get going” the contents of which just says “Hello Harvey Humphrey. You have a new journey to go on. Start journey. Thank you” It makes unemployment sounds like a great big adventure!
