We write to share that Dr. Arnold Epstein has stepped down as Chair of HPM. With immmense gratitude for his 28 years of leadership and dedication in this role, we congratulate him on his success, and welcome Dr. Meredith Rosenthal as Interim Chair. Dean Baccarelli's letter shares our sentiments.
To the Harvard Chan community, I’m writing to let you know that Arnie Epstein, John H. Foster Professor of Health Policy and Management, stepped down this week as chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management after an extraordinarily successful 28 years of leadership. Meredith Rosenthal, C. Boyden Gray Professor of Health Economics and Policy, will serve as interim chair. Those of you who have worked with Meredith know she brings integrity, empathy, energy, and commitment to every role, and I look forward to working with her as interim department chair. It is not a stretch to say that Arnie’s strategic vision and unwavering dedication to our research and education missions have transformed the School. He conceived of and helped develop our Master of Health Care Management degree program, which has trained more than 300 physicians to become successful leaders of healthcare systems. He also served for two decades on the steering committee for our Program in Clinical Effectiveness. Arnie created the HPM Executive Council, an advisory board of private sector leaders—and a model for building bridges across disciplines and sectors. Another point of pride is the strong mentoring program he developed for early-career faculty in HPM. Beyond his research, teaching, and departmental leadership, Arnie has served multiple stints in the public sector, including as policy advisor for the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services, director of the Office of Health Policy, and deputy assistant secretary in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. At Harvard Chan School, he also served as special advisor to former Dean Michelle Williams. Arnie will take a well-deserved sabbatical beginning Aug. 1 and will then return to the department as a senior professor. Please join me in thanking Arnie for his exceptional service and leadership.
