WELLS, WELLS: On this date 27 years ago, Yankees southpaw David Wells came closer than most to his second perfect game of the 1998 season.

I wrote about this game a while back for the Society for American Baseball Research’s Games Project. sabr.org/gamesproj/ga...

Today marks 30 years since the baseball world laid one of its heroes, Mickey Charles Mantle, to rest.

Phil Rizzuto’s reaction to the funeral, including this eulogy by Bob Costas, is the subject of a recent article I wrote for the Society for American Baseball Research. sabr.org/gamesproj/ga...

August has landed! And 30 years ago this month, a deluge of souvenir baseballs landed on the Dodger Stadium grass.

My latest for SABR revisits a night that Angelenos would rather forget. sabr.org/gamesproj/ga...

Today’s headlines only make this Edward R. Murrow quote more haunting:

“This instrument can teach, it can illuminate, yes, and even it can inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it’s nothing but wires and lights in a box.”

Have you ever missed a friend’s funeral and regretted it? My latest article for SABR rewinds to 30 years ago this summer — and Phil Rizzuto’s difficult day. sabr.org/gamesproj/ga...

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was initially hesitant about Mandela’s visit.

But after he saw the activist in Yankee garb saying “I am a Yankee,” Steinbrenner agreed to pay all expenses for the night.

Mandela died in 2013. In 2014 he received a plaque in Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park.

JUNE 21, 1990: Nelson Mandela, freed after 27+ years, gives a speech at Yankee Stadium.

In a Yankees jacket and cap, he tells as many as 80,000 people, “Now you know who I am. I am a Yankee!”

He says that, though he’s no longer in prison, the fight against apartheid in South Africa must continue.

One year ago, Major League Baseball paid tribute to Birmingham’s Rickwood Field — and the Black players who cultivated its legend.

I was honored to write about this night some time ago for the Society for American Baseball Research’s Games Project. sabr.org/gamesproj/ga...

“And the news came on TV
A lotta people out there hurtin'
And it really scares me
Love and mercy, that's what you need tonight”

Filling Birmingham’s Rickwood Field are stories of pain, joy, triumph, trauma, and feelings in between.

I appreciate the Society for American Baseball Research letting me tell one such story, about one night almost a year ago. sabr.org/gamesproj/ga...
