Morris' nonfiction travel books, like Sultan in Oman; her history/travelogue of the British Empire; and her memoir, Conundrum, are also all good.

The Last Samurai, Helen DeWitt. Nothing to do with Tom Cruise. A ferociously smart, funny, formally nimble book about a single mother and her son in c. 2000 London, both of whom may or may not be geniuses, the boy's idiosyncratic education, and his search for the man who could be his father.
