How the actual fuck is this a real film?
Johnny Rotten and Harvey Keitel in an 80s cop buddy movie with a Morricone soundtrack

Bit behind on my list but I will push on.

BASKET CASE

A slow start gives way to a hilariously gory B-movie, with some of the funnest horror deaths I’ve seen since Braindead. I howled at the practical FX and danced a jig at the stop motion animated monster. A blast.

BRING HER BACK
A remorselessly dark and intense second feature from the Philippou Bros. They may be goofballs but they make proper (and very watchable) horror films. Hawkins delivers possibly a career best performance in this pitch black study of grief.

THE WICKER MAN
An annual comfort rewatch & one of my all-time favourite films. A genre of one, much imitated, never bettered. The music, the lore, the relentlessly sinister cast, not-Britts bum & the horny strangeness of every aspect of the world. Love!

BLOOD & BLACK LACE
Show me a better looking horror film… See you can’t. A genre defining Giallo whose use of shadows almost feels like The Third Man but with a dancing camera & fused with a vivid colour pallet that dazzles the senses. A real game changer

HALLOW ROAD
Obvious comparisons to Locke, except the Welsh accent in this didn’t make me want to self immolate & the stakes were higher than the logistics of pouring concrete. It’s got an escalating tension sold wonderfully by Rhys and Pike. Simple but effective.

PONTYPOOL
Another Zombie Virus film? Ah go on then. This one is an inventive and claustrophobic take on a well trodden genre. Probably cost next to nothing to make, but a great script and clever directing ramp up the tension and make this sing. I enjoyed it a lot!

NANNY
An excellent companion film to the superb His House (though nowhere near as scary). Class, race, motherhood, white privilege, folk horror and the immigrant experience blend together in this dreamy mood piece. Superb cast and beautifully shot to boot

My Prime algorithm throwing up some mad shit now. This sounded like a slasher but turned out to be too grisly even for me, so had to FF some bits. I’m still counting it as a watch, even though I missed someone probably getting their spleen liquidised in great detail

TRIANGLE
Really not for me at all this one. The product of a post-‘Lost’ era where (what should be) simple horror films had delusions of grandeur rather than doing the meat and potatoes work well.

ALL THE COLOURS OF THE DARK

A #beyondfriday giallo watch-along that was as wildly horny as it was laughably odd, all held together by the mesmerisingly beautiful lead Edwige Fenech. A really fun devilish watch that does peter out a bit but overall it’s fun.

ORPHAN (rewatch)

Is this one of the top 10 stupidest films I’ve ever seen? Quite possibly. Does it work? Yes… How I don’t know, but it’s an absolutely nuts film all the better for being played straight as an arrow. An absolute riot.

SMILE 2
This movie is too long, but it does enter the pantheon of great horror sequels. Naomi Scott’s barnstorming performance as Britney Spears-esque pop star battling addictions blows away the patchy original film. Scary, clever & unapologetically gory.

A DARK SONG

A hypnotic & claustrophobic study of grief that’s extremely dark & difficult to watch at times but elevated by two incredible lead performances. A folk horror that’s light on scares but has an escalating creepy atmosphere that pulls you through

CREEP

I’m a sucker for found footage film and this is a surprisingly original and blackly funny film with a brilliant turn from Mark Duplass playing Norman Bates channelling Michael Scott. An extra half star for resisting a Radiohead needle drop!

THE DESCENT

A generationally important British horror film. Takes a bit longer to get going than I remembered but when it does, it’s scary as balls. A gooey, breathless & desperately claustrophobic fever dream that hasn’t lost any of its impact 20 years on

EVENT HORIZON

Paul WS Anderson directs the hell out of this intensely creepy deep space psychological horror. The script may be a bit hokey and it goes a bit squiffy at the end, but the design is incredible and it’s a very enjoyable watch nearly 30 years on.

The Invisible Man

A proper rewatchable classic. Leigh Whannell channels Sleeping with the Enemy in this fabulously tense subversion of a classic horror. Moss is outstanding, in this a tight, taut and gory study of coercive control. LOVE

Apart form the toe curling opening caption “Shot entirely on 35mm” (👏👏👏)
I actually really enjoyed the scuzzy grindhouse-exploitation feel of this twisted and pitch-black psycho-sexual film (lots of hyphens in that sentence). Willa Fitzgerald is stand out in this twisty dark thriller.

This is going to be the most deserving best picture Oscar since Moonlight. It’ll take me a while to digest as it’s a wild ride but it’s kinda career best work from everyone involved (particularly Penn).

PTA needs to be taught in film school for how to make a 160 min movie this breathless

WRONG TURN

Weirdly a first time watch as they’ve made a load of them.

Deliverance Chainsaw Massacre… With cannibal hicks. Not in the slightest bit tense or scary but a fun, gooey, practical effects mess. A good time.
