26 Apr 1865: Sgt. John Clark Ely of the 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, who had been released from the infamous Andersonville POW camp, writes in his journal, "Very fine day. Still upward we go." This was Ely's last journal entry.

He said that Captain Lord and Wireless Operator Evans of the Californian had been sudpoenad and were on their way with all the documents they needed for the inquiry; the Leyland Line, which operated the Californian was under the control of the IMM. #Titanic

Lightoller gave the boat orders to pull for the light on the horizon, but it seemed to disappear. Fleet said that he didn't see the light while he was in the crow's nest, but afterwards, he said the other ship didn't seem to be moving - though they could get no nearer to it.

On April 21st, it was announced in the press that the newest Olympic class vessel being built in Belfast, rumoured to be called Gigantic, would almost certainly have her plans altered considerably.

The new vessel being built, later to be called the Britannic, had had her keel laid on November 30th 1911 and it is likely that framing had been underway for a few months now. It is not likely that the modifications would have had a huge impact on the work already done.

In conversation, Hichens was singled out for criticism as Fleet felt he had given out a false story. Hichens had not obeyed instructions to wait until permission had been given from 'the boss' to talk. Remembering the gagging order, Fleet then went silent.

Back at the inquiry, Cottam briefly returned to give testimony and confirmed that he did not receive any messages from the Frankfurt and did not know of any being sent from Carpathia to the Frankfurt. #Titanic

In the UK 'Daily Mail' newspaper, an interview appears with the designer of the Olympic class vessels, Alexander Carlisle. He revealed that he had asked for new davits to be designed for the new ships which could handle four boats apiece giving 'a total of over 40 boats.'

It wasn't just the men who were harangued on the Carpathia. Stewardess Annie Martin said in an interview, 'We were very severely abused by women passengers ... because we had been saved, and were told that we ought to have given our places in the boat up to passengers.'
