sometimes I think about entire professions with lost expertise; cobol and assembly experts, for instance, are hard to come by. but it goes to other things too:

the knowledge to make advanced batteries never appeared in america because the more basic knowledge was lost when manufacturing moved away
Senior software engineer at Anthropic (former engineering director at Meta & VP of engineering at Robinhood) declares software engineering a solved problem by Claude Code.

It’s going to be ironic if the first job truly replaced by AI is software engineering.

Today I learned Genghis Khan was over 40 when he set out to conquer the world beyond the Mongolian plateau. As someone who just turned 40 a few months ago, I suppose I should conclude that it's too early to give up on accomplishing anything in my life. 🤔

There is a whole underworld of exploited workers who make up the foundation of digital tech. We talk about content moderators, but content farms are also very exploitative industries where moderately educated people with reasonable English skills in the global majority are used to push content.
It may be hard to believe, but Twitter was once a useful public space instead of a weird monetization scheme for racist ragebait chatbots.

I found this part of this thread to be really insightful and something to watch out for in all my communities/social groups.
And the reality of much online abuse, especially dedicated group threat actors, is: people get into performing it through multiple methods of desensitization and social connections, you don't have to be Wrong to fall prey to the people who recruit, you don't need to be a sociopath or have history

The thing about DOGE is it accomplished neither its ostensible nor actual goals but did manage to cause a couple of holocausts worth of deaths internationally.

And the media finds none of those three things particularly notable.
It remains insane to me that DOGE was treated at the time as an impressive shock and awe accomplishment - “you can’t deny he’s getting stuff done!” - and then instantly memory holed by the press once if became clear it was a total failure by every possible standard including Musk’s own
Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.

Nice to have a list of the House Dems who most need to be primaried.
Trump is filling his government with Nazis, consolidating authoritarian power, and eroding democracy at every chance.

And yet these 86 House Democrats voted for a right-wing messaging amendment to say that the real authoritarians are the socialists.

Pathetic.

“If every time that ICE strikes, they leave each community more mobilized, interconnected, and radicalized than before, we can use their efforts to eventually become capable of defeating them.”
For months, protesters have sought to tie down ICE agents at a holding facility outside Chicago.

Here, participants reflect on this strategy, evaluating it alongside other strategies such as rapid response networks and showing how Democratic politicians have been instrumental in supporting ICE.

Participants in the ongoing protests at the ICE holding facility in Broadview reflect on what has worked and explore the complicity of Democratic politicians with the violence of ICE.

This looks like one of the largest protests on Beach St. in weeks, where the city of Broadview is still enforcing a small “free speech” zone. It’s packed.
