Hugh's loyalty to Rhaenyra and her cause never wavers. He fights for her fiercely and with pride.
He ends up claiming Vermithor by yelling at the dragon and showing no fear. He remains a loyal dragonrider on Rhaenyra's side. He also remains friends with Alyssa, who he remembers from her childhood. He owes Alyssa a debt that he feels he can never repay. She helps him learn to be a dragonrider.

He learns later, from Mysaria, that Alyssa remembered his kindness to her and goaded her father into providing the medicine necessary to save his daughter's life. Thanks to her, his daughter is saved just barely in time. As the years pass, things get worse. He answers the call for new dragonriders.

He gets word to Daemon, through Mysaria, that Alyssa is with him and that he would see her returned to him. He explains the situation as to why he held Alyssa hostage in the first place and that he was double crossed. What he doesn't know is that Alyssa pulls through to save his daughter.

Hugh agrees, only because he is promised the means to save his daughter. He can see that the girl he is holding hostage only wants to go home and fears Larys. Hugh and his wife show her kindness while she is in their home. When Larys fails to procure the medicine, Hugh decides to help Alyssa.
