Many counties let you join their libraries even if you don't live there, so if you're visiting somewhere else in the UK try joining a library there to get access to ebooks and audiobooks on borrowbox that your library might not have.

The people who make Shein's clothes labor for ten to twelve hours per day (in violation of China's labor laws), some up to seven days a week, and earn as little as 15 to 30 cents per t-shirt.
Excerpt from a BBC article: ""We usually work, 10, 11 or 12 hours a day," says a 49-year-old woman from Jiangxi unwilling to give her name. "On Sundays we work around three hours less." She is in an alleyway, where a dozen people are huddled around a row of bulletin boards. They are reading the job ads on the board, while examining the stitching on a pair of chinos draped over it. This is Shein's supply chain. The factories are contracted to make clothes on order - some small, some big. If the chinos are a hit, orders will ramp up and so must production. Factories then hire temporary workers to meet the demand their permanent staff cannot fulfil. The migrant worker from Jiangxi is looking for a short-term contract - and the chinos are an option. "We earn so little. The cost of living is now so high," she says, adding that she hopes to make enough to send back to her two children who are living with their grandparents. "We get paid per piece," she explains. "It depends how difficult the item is. Something simple like a t-shirt is one-two yuan [less than a dollar] per piece and I can make around a dozen in an hour.""

SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level. This beautiful glass bowl looks modern, yet it’s about 2,250 years old! 🤩

Made using an innovative technique in which thin threads of twisted glass were spiralled over a convex mould. Wonderful example of the skill of ancient artisans!

My photo shows a Hellenistic hemispherical yellow glass bowl measuring 12.8 cm in diameter and 7 cm in height. A reflection of the bowl can be seen in the display case glass behind. The bowl is composed of thin threads of colourless, opaque yellow, and dark purple glass, twisted together and then spiralled around a convex mould. Scholars refer to this type of mosaic glassware as a ‘network’ vessel. Dated 270-246 BC, it was found at Canosa di Puglia in Italy, which at that time was a Hellenistic Greek colony. It was in fragments when found, and has since been reconstructed, with 15% of the reconstruction made of modern material. Place of manufacture eastern Mediterranean. Part of the collections at Landesmuseum Württemberg, Stuttgart, Germany.

My photo shows a limestone wall panel carved in bas relief from the Fifth Dynasty Funerary Temple of king Userkaf at Saqqara, 2465-2458 BC. It shows birds and a butterfly in a papyrus thicket in the marshes of the river Nile. A pied kingfisher and butterfly hover above the papyrus thicket, whilst a hoopoe, an ibis with long curved beak, a night heron, and a gallinule,are depicted amongst the papyrus umbrels.
