I think the increasing rarity of that word just supports my point tbh.

Maybe many people don't realize, but that doesn't change anything about whether the underlying logic I have explained is correct.

If you use "figuratively" instead (like you just did), you are harming the figurative meaning of your sentence by taking away some of the weight that was conveyed through the contrast between the declaration of literal meaning despite the clear figurative context.

using "literally" figuratively is perfectly fine. It works because every sentence is by default literal, but can then become figurative depending on the context. By adding "literally", you are only emphasizing this default assumption, which creates a stronger contrast to the figurative context.

I'll give one when I get home (for some reason it doesn't seem to be possible on mobile), but you should probably censor the person's username...

Thanks for sharing anyways.

I'm still skeptical of the movement, but you've made me more open to it.

That's fair. For offline games I entirely agree, but for multiplayer games the experience just seems too reliant on the presence of other players. As those players start leaving the game, I feel like you might be getting a more accurate experience by just watching a video of the game's peak.

Yeah, but they would still lose the game they enjoyed playing in favor of a game they enjoy much less.

But putting some of the big recent edge-cases aside, how do you feel about games being shut down because they barely have any players left?
July 18, 2025 at 6:49 PM
You know what, fair enough.

I guess what bothers me is that I can't really know how complicated it would be to make your networking modular (clearly not an MMO dev myself lol), and I wish the people at the forefront of the discourse were the ones with actual experience...
July 18, 2025 at 6:34 PM
Yeah I wouldn't say there's no harm at all, but how bad do you think the harm really is?

With the Overwatch example, they could have just made Overwatch 2 an official update to OW 1 without going against what the initiative demands (which opens up another can of worms from the art preservation PoV)

But then is it really "reasonable" to expect people to purchase third-party software in the first place? We have no way of knowing how that word will be interpreted in the final law, and regardless of how loose or strict it ends up being, one side will suffer more or less from it.

[...] services that are going to be inaccessible to most consumers? Certain companies just don't do business with private individuals, for example.
July 18, 2025 at 6:10 PM
I think this assumes a level of modularity that's not always a given. I know modular code is best practice for a reason, but when it's missing, there's usually a reason (lack of experience, cost-cutting, performance concerns).

Also, wouldn't this mean AAA devs could intentionally license [...]

I think IP is important under capitalism, though I agree with some of the critiques libertarians have and think it should be reformed.
July 18, 2025 at 6:05 PM
Well, you could explain to me why you think this would mitigate serious harm to players/consumers. I think we all agree that stuff like The Crew was an issue, but I don't see the benefit in widening the scope to every possible game.

We don't have to argue about that perspective, I'm just curious.

Anything that doesn't permit distribution to end-users or has a specified limitation of "seats".
July 18, 2025 at 5:57 PM
That may be the more important point we disagree on.

I don't think it's necessarily unfair to lose licensing rights to a piece of software, nor do I think the positives would outweigh the negatives, if we are talking in terms of outcomes (which are more important to me anyway).
July 18, 2025 at 5:54 PM
I wouldn't entirely share that assumption, but either way, there are still concerns regarding the licensing of third-party code and security (if you plan on continuing to use the same infrastructure).

I don't really buy the official response of "people will just make different deals".

There are games where players can have their down local servers. There are also games where players can connect peer to peer. That doesn't mean it's feasible for every type of game.

This is part of what I mean when I say it's not taking the concerns seriously.
July 18, 2025 at 5:33 PM
As I said in my second comment, he was probably going over different options to comply with the initiative. Otherwise, his other concerns would make no sense, and it felt really weird to me that Ross didn't acknowledge this in this "take-down".
July 18, 2025 at 5:32 PM
That might be your view, but the initiative applies to every game without exceptions. Any small team that decides to work on an MMO, already an overly ambitious project by its very nature, could be negatively affected by this.
July 18, 2025 at 5:29 PM
And why would he make an argument about that if he thought the initiative was about turning multiplayer games into functioning singleplayer experiences. It's been ages since I've seen his videos on the subject, but I'm getting the impression that he was just going over the possible options.
July 18, 2025 at 5:25 PM
The issue is that the clarifications are largely just "No, not at all". It's acting as if a lot of this stuff is completely trivial, which just rubs me the wrong way.

I also don't think PS believes games would have to become single player. IIRC he also had concerns over handing out server binaries.
July 18, 2025 at 5:24 PM
I think what's concerning is that Accursed Farms has heard a lot of the common criticisms and clearly doesn't take them seriously. That doesn't inspire a lot of faith in how much better the actual law would be.
