3️⃣ Bed type matters

We compared bed types (hard, soft, and mixed) and found more ice loss on hard beds by 2100, except with inefficient drainage. Bed conditions near the grounding line shape glacier sensitivity. A sharp hard-to-soft transition stabilizes the glacier more than a gradual one.
March 27, 2025 at 10:20 AM
2️⃣ Importance of the coupling between hydrology and ice flow

Experiments show subglacial hydrology must be updated with ice-sheet changes. The effective pressure time step should match the ice-flow model; otherwise, interactions are lost, mimicking no hydrology.
March 27, 2025 at 10:20 AM
1️⃣ Subglacial #hydrology matters

We tested a subglacial hydrology model on Thwaites Glacier, showing it accelerates grounding-line retreat. By 2100, #SeaLevelRise could reach 95 mm (hard bed) or 20 mm (soft bed), vs. 10 mm without hydrology

All models indicate Thwaites’ eventual collapse.

Let's conclude with 5 #policy actions for #glaciers & coastal protection

✅ Cut emissions
✅ Boost monitoring of glaciers and ice sheets
✅ Advance ice sheet modeling
✅ Support coastal adaptation
✅ Foster global cooperation

Let's wrap up with 4 key messages👇

Mitigation is critical: Cutting emissions slows glacier loss
Adaptation is urgent: We must prepare for water & coastal risks
Regional variability matters: Local solutions are key
Uncertainty is no excuse: Science guides action

🔟 Shaping tomorrow’s coastlines: the long-term impact of #SeaLevelRise

Population dynamics strongly impact coastal vulnerability, emphasizing the need for strategies addressing both emissions and demographics

9️⃣ #Impacts and #adaptation strategies for #SeaLevelRise by 2150

Balancing protection and retreat is essential to address #SeaLevelRise impacts sustainably on a global scale

8️⃣ Navigating uncertainty: adapting to #SeaLevelRise with flexible strategies

Uncertainties are not barriers to action: Decision science offers pathways to act amid the uncertainties, leveraging adaptation frameworks and pathways.

7️⃣ Sea level is committed to rise until 2300 and
beyond, but we can influence how much and how fast

The Paris Agreement scenario buys 100 more years to adapt to a 1m #SeaLevelRise

5️⃣ The #Greenland Ice Sheet is losing its protective compressed snow (firn) buffer, accelerating mass loss

We should monitor Greenland’s firn layer to improve and model sea level rise

4️⃣ Future #SeaLevel: the enduring legacy of #Antarctic ice loss

Even with the Paris Agreement, Antarctica may face irreversible changes, driving long-term sea-level rise

2️⃣ Every glacierized region evolves differently under climate change, and so do the impacts

The 275 000 glaciers in the world react differently. Impacts range from water shortages to hydropower disruptions
