Yes, joining the fight mid-1941 and patting themselves on the back for finally taking part, then deciding they'd won the entire war. Facts vs that mythical exceptionalism again.

In the case of the US, I suspect it has much to do with the inability to distinguish between relevant facts & an all-permeating mythology of exceptionalism.

Just one aspect itself, the underground shelter system, is astounding: modern design, restaurants, kindergarten, activity & play areas, gyms, shops,used in peace time but every square cm reversible in minutes to protect the population of Helsinki. Machine & tech training of ALL citizens obligatory.

Listened to a CBCRadio broadcast a while ago on Finland's civil defence prep. Found what they've done & cotinue to expand on truly outstanding. Also find it frightening to know how totally unprepared & uninformed we Cdns are.
