Short fiction writers, please read this and equip yourselves to make informed choices about the contracts you sign. 💔💪
On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

This affects the ebook of my mythic realist novella THE LAST DRAGONERS OF BOWBAZAR. If you want to get the ebook, you can order it directly from the @subpress.bsky.social here. It's about a family who may be refugees from another reality, living in Calcutta.

THE GIFT by Alison Croggon. I was 13 and struggling w/my library's stuffy SFF section. It was earnest, framed as a translation of history with a fake bibliography in the back, & a female protagonist who had periods. I was OBSESSED.

The whole series is gorgeous & I dont hear it talked about enough.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Yesss, BEFORE THE FEAST is so good.
i am constantly yelling about BEFORE THE FEAST by Saša Stanišić (translated by Anthea Bell). the structure! the point of view! the pacing! the magic! the characters! the resolution! it was the book i wanted not only to constantly *read* but constantly *write*

thrilled it exists
