I decided quite early on that despite clan lavellan not surviving my playthrough, I’d put far too much grief on Eilhana already to do that to her.

… unfortunately of course in this fic if one thing doesn’t happen the heartwrenching way it does in game, something else has to happen instead, hence:
“Is it true? Would your clan turn you away for the same?” Eilhana stands still. She does not meet his eyes. She takes a deep breath, then says: “Yes.” Thom can do nothing but stare at her. She keeps ducking away from him. She must have known this all along. How must she have felt, in truth, discovering she was pregnant with the child of a man who was not who he said he was, and that that child would permanently rip her from the only real home she’d ever had? He grips her shoulders and forces her to face him. “Eilhana.” He shakes her. “Eilhana! Why would you keep it, if it meant that? To be forever apart from your family?” It is only then she lifts her head to look at him, eyes burning bright and fierce. “Because I love you. Because I have always loved you, and there was a time I thought this might be the only part I got to keep of you. You think I could have gone home again, if it wasn’t for the baby? You think that is the only thing that will permanently set me apart from my kin? How do I return and live that simple life and pay my respects to Mythal and to Sylaise and to Ghilan’nain if they call me the Herald of Andraste? You think I wouldn’t be seen as a traitor to my people, to my customs, for letting the shemlen make me their figurehead, even if I have denied any link to Andraste since the moment they foisted that title on me?”

especially in my dragon age universe, where alistair married mahariel and there was an unexpected baby that said that alistair's mother must have been an elf, alistair and mahariel aren't stupid, they've been looking, and all roads do lead to fiona...
At this, Fiona’s face changes. She seethes. “Where did you hear that? Duncan and Maric—they both swore they would take that secret to their graves. I believed they did so.” “Solas,” Lyna says. “He saw it in the Fade. One of a hundred things he knew and should not have known. I did not even know it was true.” She thinks a moment longer. Duncan would be an obvious person who Fiona would have found it difficult to have hidden such a thing from, could well have been the single person she confided in, but why would Maric know about the child Fiona bore and gave away? Wait. Fiona had a son, who she could not keep, and whose father could not keep them either. That child would have been born some thirty years ago, just before Fiona’s exile from the Wardens, after the death of Maric’s wife. A son who Duncan would have known of, and who might have looked out for, even if his mother and father both turned away in pursuit of their own affairs. Alistair’s mother was an elf. Arl Eamon had claimed to not know who she was, when they’d confronted him about his previous lies on the matter, but he’d known enough to know that whoever Alistair’s mother had been, she had not been some simple serving girl in one of Ferelden’s palaces.

me, a person who is spending far too much time thinking about historical hairstyling for my blackwall / lavellan / cullen trespasser epilogue piece, and not enough time thinking about the smut that should be happening.

“Careful, love.” Thom’s voice interrupts them, a hand placed on Cullen’s back. Cullen wants to sink into that touch. Eilhana lets go of him, but she keeps looking at him. “Let’s get your hair unstitched and that dress off you first.” Cullen is pretty sure this break is not for the sake of Eilhana’s hair and clothing. He thinks it is for him. His blood thrums beneath his skin. It is probably a good idea. When he looks up, he finds that Thom has already lost his own dinner finery, standing in an undershirt and his trousers, bare feet on the rug. He holds a small, unfamiliar object in his hand; a clipper, with some sort of blade? “If I give you this, are you capable of getting her hair down without cutting it?” “I may need some guidance,” Cullen admits. This is the sort of thing that lady’s maids are for. Eilhana had had some earlier, to do whatever it is they’d done to her hair to get it like that, and get her into the dress, but she’d declined for their help afterwards. Thom points out the thread in Eilhana’s hair that holds her braids in place. Cullen manages to pull enough of it clear to cut it with the tool—better for the job than a knife or a pair of scissors, he discovers—and slowly unpicks the rest of the thread from her hair. Two long braids cascade down her back, and Thom stops Cullen when he goes to cut the ties securing the ends. “It’s a vision, but it’s a mess,” he says. “Leave it like that.”

latest bit from my dragon age wip, in which solas and my dalish warden get on about as well as solas and my dalish inquisitor aka not well, and they've been left alone with nothing to do but argue.

noodling away at dragon age fic, because doing a second run is not enough when all the characters from run one are occupying my head about the paths they couldn't take in the game...

anyway I took the last boat tour out of the (regular) day because I really wanted to see the transition and I was not disappointed, we started in the light and ended in the dark, saw the city in all its stages, just. lovely.
