Limiting overshoot and returning back to below 1.5°C is still possible and worth fighting for. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is no longer a choice, but a necessity - so both deep fossil phase-out and negative emissions are absolutely essentially. Our science-based statement on the Paris targets 👇

Stunned to see the extremely bullish nuclear power deployment in @iea.org #WEO2025: +30% in under "current policies", i.e. a World without any further climate policies? This is hard to buy, given the poor track record of nuclear in past decades, with huge cost overruns and delay.

Fun fact: iron & steel-making in China produces about 2x the total GHG emissions as China's entire transportation sector, and cement production is about equal to transportation. So while CO2 prices in China's ETS are expected to be modest, including these sectors under emissions caps is a big deal.

Latest German energy statistics allow an early peak on CO2 balance for 2024. Coal declines, but this along with changes in oil and gas use this will translate to a mere 15 MtCO2 decline relative to 2023 (own estimate). Germany needs twice as much, 30 MtCO2 per year, to reach its -65% goal in 2030.
#Renewables supplied 55% of electricity used in Germany in 2024

> #coal use down significantly
> almost no change for #natgas

Demand flexibility would be particularly important for Germany - given ambitious wind and solar build-out, and growing potential for flexible demands from heat pumps and electric cars. However, still way behind most other European countries regarding smart meter rollout. A costly policy failure!
