Been a while since I posted #astrophotography: here's the Heart Nebula, one of my favorite parts of the night sky (I say that about a lot of the sky though)

60x180s exposures (3 hours) with a Ha/Hb/OIII narrowband filter, from Bortle-5 upstate New York.

The Discourse is making me think of the Kangaroo Chronicles meme.

Seems qualified for DOGE.

I captured this moon halo two nights ago.

Dutchess County, across the Hudson River from Ulster County, was giving the choice of the standard "I Voted" sticker or the Ulster County Spider.

There's no other sticker I'd want.

Today for your skyline I have captured the California Nebula. Discovered by E. E. Barnard (of Barnard's Loop and Barnard's Star fame) in 1884. It also reminds me of a swipe of paint.

I love when there's someone people are talking about and I discover that I subscribe to a list that already blocks them. Really makes this such a nice place to be.

Yup! I saw it for the first time tonight too!! I'm at 41º, north of New York. Snapped this above my house looking north.

Ursa minor is just left of the middle of the frame.

More outer space for your skyline: the cloud of gas surrounding the Elephant's Trunk (right middle of the frame where you see the darker gas extending toward the center frame) and Herschel's Garnet Star.

Something different for your skyline: the Crescent Nebula in Cygnus with its environs, a larger gas cloud in the Sadr region.

I like capturing deep sky objects in their larger context. It makes space feel bigger & emptier to me.

What is the whole hubbub about?

Oh, amazing. No social media is perfect but realizing I don’t have to care is a happy moment.

Huh. I am apparently the 1%.

This old man, mongrel through and through, is nearly 17 and is just the best.

Alright, here's some gentle processing of a mean stack of all my totality exposures (multiple frames at 1-stop intervals from 1/4000s to 1/8s)! #Astrophotography
April 11, 2024 at 11:51 AM
My favorite single exposure of the eclipse, without any processing time, etc.

That big prominence was so *visible* to the naked eye.

This is right before the end of totality, in Vermont.
April 9, 2024 at 3:40 AM
I think so. This is my favorite single frame, with little to no processing, because that one prominence was so visible to the naked eye.

Will be stacking a bunch of the exposures I got together over the next few days.

The past few nights have been so clear and beautiful, with a waning moon, so here's the final nine panel mosaic of the Heart and Soul nebulas.

I'm really happy with how well this turned out. The most I've done before has been 3 panel mosaics on the same night.

This one I'm really proud of. This is a six panel mosaic of the Heart Nebula in broadband color (I'm working on panels of the Soul Nebula for my own version of the grand Heart-and-Soul mosaic). 🔭🛰️
