Just finished “Heart of American Darkness” myself.

This book made me re-watch Apocalypse Now and pull out some old indigenous political anthropology proceedings (from the’80s).

“Bewilderment” as a frame for the US frontier (and our recurring/current failure to escape it) explains so much!

catalpa is a good detail. i've noticed just one plant or bird name can really anchor a poem, even if i don't know what it is. helps that so many plant, bird, etc. names are either scientific greek/latin or something awkwardly anglo-saxon like "wolf's-breath tree" or whatever
