Ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, Limnology. Trying to combine fieldwork and modelling. In January, Assistant Professor in Ecosystem Ecology at IceLab in Umeå University (Sweden).
My latest paper is now out in Limnology and Ocenography Letters @aslo.org, titled "Emerging patterns of CO2 : O2 dynamics in rivers and their link to ecosystem carbon processing". It is open access, so go read! I am mostly proud of this figure, which I spent a lot of hours figuring out how to do it

Today was the first field day in my ERC ARIMETH project! I installed a oxygen and water level sensor in Krycklan. It was a great field day, wearing t-shirt, sunny... But this is so wrong. Mid-april in northern Sweden means a thick snow cover, but this has been an abnormally warm and dry winter.

I'm starting to build DIY CO2+CH4 measurement devices and I came across this kind of neat air-water equilibrator, EQSphere. Anyone heard of this before and has experience with it? eqsphere.com

"Abrupt transformation of west Greenland lakes following compound climate extremes associated with atmospheric rivers". This new article in PNAS by Jasmine Saros and colleague Vendy Hazuková is pretty striking www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....

We have a new paper out! During my stay in Blanes, Susana Bernal led this great work: "Expanding towards contraction: the alternation of floods and droughts as a fundamental component in river ecology", now published in Biogeochemistry link.springer.com/article/10.1...

I'm hiring, two fully funded PhD positions! Come work in Umeå in Arctic Sweden, a leading place for high-latitude ecosystem ecology and carbon biogeochemistry

The sun barely peeks above the horizon in the winter solstice in Umeå - but we still have homegrown tomatoes at latitude 63!

#AGU24 kicks off this Sunday morning with the permafrost carbon in person meeting.

On my way to #AGU24! I will have my presentation on Thursday on the role of groundwater to reconcile river metabolism and carbon cycling

Today a decision that goes against the deepest core values of Swedish society has been taken by my university

Looks interesting, the graphical abstract is not the simplest I have seen though

Today Kim Sneppen from the Niels Bohr institute gave a great talk in IceLab_Umeå on simple models in biology, showing the power and complexity arising from models of 3,2 or even 1 parameter across any biological scale

My ERC Starting Grant got funded! Next year I will be back at Umeå University with the project "A mechanistic Understanding of Arctic River Methane emissions".

I've been also checking a stream for a major upcoming experiment... anyone with experience heating up a whole stream? Because I just got some money to do that

Today I went to Krycklan to see how it is going for some colleagues from Durham (Cat, Jotis and Elisabeth). They are installing wells in the soil, to study carbon processes interactions with sulphur and anoxic processes. Looks promising!

This article by E. Freund and others is the coolest work I've seen in a while. They show how groundwater inputs determine the shape of river networks! agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

Today's attempt of fitting a bunch of sensors in a narrow groundwater well. That needs some improvement...
