Why don’t we just ban science. It would have about the same effect. And of course, this is while US companies are shopping in China for new technology.

U.S. Congress considers sweeping ban on Chinese collaborations

This is nuts. How many labs and programs had 🇨🇳 postdocs or grad students or collaborators? And then 5 years retroactively?

Going forward is one thing but being basically banned from your employment and from making a living when you happen to be on a paper with a 🇨🇳 scientist 5 years ago??
I've been on the road so I'm behind the times—but if you wanted to destroy US science, I can think of no more expedient action.

Blatant unconstitutionality aside, fuck this backwards forwards and sideways.

Just got an email from my SRO for the study section that was missed in October. Good news is that they are trying to reschedule ASAP (Dec/Jan). The bad news is that CSR is mandating that only the the top third (not half) of applications will get discussed for the next 2 rounds.

CHatGPT: "no increase or cut for NIH; it just extends existing levels until Jan 30, 2026. Any real change to NIH’s FY26 appropriation will come later, when a full Labor–HHS bill is finally enacted.
It does not newly legislate a 15% indirect-cost cap (or any other specific NIH indirect rate).

Do we have any idea what is in this budget bill regarding NIH budget, NSF budged and IDRs?

Asking for all my fellow scientists in the US and for a nation (NIH funding = drug pipeline = more cures)!

One car here is not like your usual car and certainly not your everyday commuting car.

I would be nervous to leave my silver Roma Spider as commuting car at the train station parking lot…

Thankfully that will never be one of my problems.

Reading a New Yorker article. When senior advisers to the administration write an outlining how to “destroy Columbia University” I think more academic institutions should have realized that this is not a good faith negotiation with them in anything…

The thing to understand about this is that this catastrophe in the UK has redounded to the political benefit of the very same people and political movement that pushed for it! Extremely perverse.
I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world?

Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is around 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (Source: www.nber.org/papers/w34459)
