A comic about a stress dream about friendship.
A comic. Each panel has a version of the The Sims 1 UI overlaid. Panel 1: Emma says, “man I have been so depressed over the winter. I feel like I’ve lost touch with all my friends…” The UI shows Emma’s moodlets in various states of fulfillment. Panel 2: the UI has switched to display Emma’s relationships. Several people are displayed with numerical friendship scores — which are mostly low, with some even trending into the negative. “Oh no, it’s worse than I thought…” says Emma. “Aside from the people who live in my house, everyone is basically a stranger. Panel 3: “Let me start by texting Escher…” Escher’s portrait is selected in the relationships menu, his value is 19. Emma sends a text message that reads “hey I miss you how are you doing?” Panel 4: Emma panics, seeing Escher’s score drop to 16.

I think about this strip a good bit since the first time I saw it. From all of the experiences i've had in relationships, negative and positive, it's hard to ever really say i want to be held so tightly and never let go. It feels suffocating in that sense. I've had partners in the past that-
