You weren't in Nova Scotia for the ice storm in, I think 2007? Our power went out, and when I contacted NSPower the estimated time of restoration was 5 days for most of the Annapolis Valley.

Persistence of Vision, a collection of SciFi short stories by John Varley. His Titan/Wizard/Demon Trilogy is my favourite book series in all genres, after LOTR. But it's very close.

I didn't know Lake Winnipeg had fossils that old, very cool! Vaguely related: in the 90s at Victoria Beach I found a roughly triangular stone, with a perfectly circular hole in it, that I am 99% sure was a net sinker used by First Nations fishers.
