Imagine standing before an enormous, steaming pool the size of a football field. From its center radiates a deep, pure blue, fading outward into rings of green, yellow, orange, and red — like a living rainbow on the earth’s surface. Mist rises constantly from the hot water, shimmering in the sunlight, while the air smells faintly of minerals and sulfur. The ground around it is stained in brilliant hues and cracked with fine, branching patterns like veins. Forested hills form a quiet, green backdrop beyond the haze. Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States and one of the largest in the world. It sits in Yellowstone’s Midway Geyser Basin, an area fueled by the immense volcanic system beneath the park. About 640,000 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption formed the Yellowstone Caldera — a vast underground chamber that still supplies heat to the region today. The spring’s brilliant colors come from microbial mats — thin layers of heat-loving bacteria that thrive in the mineral-rich water. Different microbes dominate at different temperatures, producing distinct pigments. Near the boiling center, where few organisms survive, the water appears a deep blue because of its purity and the scattering of sunlight. As the water cools toward the edges, orange, red, and yellow rings form from microbial colonies adapted to lower heat. The result is a living, ever-changing spectrum that reflects both the power of Yellowstone’s geothermal activity and the resilience of life in extreme environments.

This is the Matsumoto Castle (松本城), located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Also known as the “Crow Castle” (Karasu-jō) due to its striking black exterior, it is one of Japan’s most complete and original feudal castles. Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro), built on a plain rather than a hill or mountain. Its elegant wooden donjon (main keep) features multiple roofs and watchtowers, surrounded by a moat and red bridges that enhance its beauty—especially in winter or during cherry blossom season. The contrast of black-and-white walls with the vivid red bridge and reflective moat makes it one of Japan’s most photogenic historic sites. The castle’s origins trace back to 1504, during the Sengoku (Warring States) Period, when the Ogasawara clan constructed the original fortification, Fukashi Castle. In the late 16th century, Ishikawa Kazumasa and his son Yasunaga, vassals of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, expanded it into the impressive structure seen today. Following the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), Matsumoto Castle came under Tokugawa rule and was governed by several daimyō families throughout the Edo period. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), it was nearly dismantled but was saved thanks to local citizens’ efforts led by Ichikawa Ryozo. Today, Matsumoto Castle is a National Treasure of Japan and one of only twelve castles in the country that still retain their original main keep. It stands as a symbol of Japan’s samurai heritage, architectural ingenuity, and the enduring pride of the Matsumoto community.

Today, Whalers Bay stands as a haunting open-air museum — rusted tanks, collapsed buildings, and scattered bones silently narrate a story of human ambition and nature’s enduring dominance. The anti-vaccine movement has the same talking points now as it did in the 1800’s. It’s always been a rejection of science, scientists, and progress, with a soupçon of paranoia.

Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa, opened in 2011, sits on the shores of Lake Sarmiento near Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. It was developed by the Purcell family—the same owners of Portillo Ski Resort—and forms part of the Tierra Hotels collection, known for its “eco-luxury” philosophy. The hotel was designed by renowned Chilean architect Cazú Zegers, whose concept was to create a building that seemed shaped by the wind and landscape, like a “fossil” embedded in the earth. Its long, sinuous form hugs the contours of the Patagonian steppe, allowing it to merge with the natural surroundings rather than dominate them. Clad in locally sourced lenga wood, the structure weathers to a silvery tone that echoes the hues of the plains and mountains beyond. Predators: The main predator is the puma (mountain lion). Guanacos rely on keen eyesight & speed (they can run up to 55 km/h or 35 mph) to escape. Conservation Status IUCN status: Least Concern, but populations are fragmented. Threats: Habitat loss, hunting for meat and fiber, and competition with livestock. Protection: They are protected in several reserves & national parks.
