Heading to our County Green group away day by bus (how else 🚌 🤩) and this is peak multi modal infrastructure:

It’s our job to make sure roads are safe to use. We maintain 1,979 miles of footways and cycleways, 60,327 street lights, 59,724 traffic signals and 147,000 drains. Bridges, lines and signs are also often our responsibility too. Our roadworks map shows what is currently planned or is happening now. This will keep you up to date with any changes to our plans. To put it mildly: disingenuous of Oxford Labour to turn up to an anti racism and pro refugee march given their national party's racist and anti refugee rhetoric and policy...

Presently, those given refugee status have it for five years, after which they can apply for indefinite leave to remain and eventually citizenship. But Mahmood's ministry, known as the Home Office, said it would cut the length of refugee status to 30 months. That protection will be "regularly reviewed" and refugees will be forced to return to their home countries once they are deemed safe, it added. The ministry also said that it intended to make those refugees who were granted asylum wait 20 years before applying to be allowed to live in the UK long-term. Currently, they can do so after five years.

My dad: you need deeper foundations to get planning permission for an extension.

I'm really glad that my support for the congestion charge AND calls for improvements have been repoeted.

I will continue to advocate for permits per adult (not per car), heavier cars paying more and revenues to benefit other buses (rather than P&R).

Green councillor Emma Garnett, who represents Parks, said, who voted against the motion, said: “This congestion charge is not perfect for everyone, no transport scheme ever is, but it is a significant step forward. “It would be fantastic if we could have fast and frequent buses and safer walking and wheeling without disincentives and restrictions for parking and driving, but unfortunately that simply never happens.” She added some changes should be made, including that permits should be allocated per adult rather than per car, for bigger cars to pay more, and that funds should be used to benefit public transport for everyone, not just park and rides. The motion was defeated, with 36 councillors voting against, 22 councillors voting in favour and two councillors abstaining. Extract from the article

V sorry to hear about the community bus.
By bringing buses back into public ownership with national investment to have a good bus network everywhere.

Scrapping the fuel duty freeze would raise a lot of revenue and cut emissions. Cost of bus&rail travel has risen much more steeply than car travel.

And here's the speech from my brilliant Green colleague, James Barlow (Wallingford).
I agree with all of it.
With many others, Green Cllrs Jones, McLauchlan & I took the X40 bus into Oxford up the Abingdon Rd this morning. Usually it’s quicker to get off & walk, but this morning the journey took just 4 & a half mins from Redbridge Park &Ride to Folly Bridge. If we were walking, the bus would have quickly disappeared into the distance - our commute from South Oxfordshire didn’t grind to a halt in Oxford. Another green colleague travelling on a bus on Cowley Road yesterday said that the bus had to wait at four different stops to match the service with the timetable because the bus was moving so much faster in the lack of traffic. & we learn that Park & Ride buses are busier now since the congestion charge was introduced. Of course this is early days and we must continue to closely monitor data on traffic across the city and effects on business, public services and active travel. The motion mentions the cost of living. We badly need to make public transport more affordable. The CON govt under Rishi Sunak brought in a £2 bus fare cap - this was excellent & transformative for many people & areas. This year the LAB govt increased that by 50%, to £3. AND just this week the Labour government has rejected recommendations from the cross-party Transport Committee for free bus travel for under 22s in England and Wales. I note that under 22s travel for free on buses in Scotland, thanks to the Scottish Greens. Lower income households are less likely to own cars and more likely to rely on buses, and many disabled people who can’t drive do use buses. So, let’s use the funds raised from the congestion charge to subsidise our buses, particularly in rural areas which have seen one fifth of services nationwide disappear over the last five years.

Here are the things I ran out of time to say:
In terms of support - 74% of the transport citizens’ assembly participants supported a congestion charge; many Lib Dems and Greens – running on a policy of supporting the bus filters - were elected in May. I represent Parks division where 2 of the 6 cameras are located. It is very early days but the drop in traffic and danger on St Clements and the Plain seem remarkable. Residents of mine are really hopeful they can soon walk and cycle safely there with the young son. We door knocked a builder in east Oxford recently who supported the congestion charge because it makes doing his job easier. He said he keeps his support quiet because some of his neighbours are very against it.
