For me, it was series like Thieve's World and Bradley's Darkover books, especially her character Lythande in Thieve's World & Darkover's Renunciates. The characters really spoke to me, and I read these long before I came out (decades before). When I transitioned I chose Lythande as middle name.

My uncle was killed in Germany by Nazi soldiers less than 3 weeks before Germany surrendered. He gave his life fighting Nazis & fascism, I will never surrender to the fascists of this time! This is one of his 2 purple hearts.
