I used to stuff myself into the small, small, box of patriarchal evangelical christianity--but I finally got free and found a God in the wilderness who is more expansive than I ever imagined, and more welcoming to all the parts of me than I had ever dared to dream.

Oh and I wrote a book about it.
I'm sorry someone told you God was so terribly small. You've been afraid of scarcity your entire life.
But there's enough Beloved--you can be free.

Just finished up my essay about coming out, being (mis)understood, and what it takes to be people who seek to understand different perspectives in order to pursue freedom and wholeness for everyone.

As countless others have said: Pelicot is the true “person of the year.”
Gisèle Pelicot stood with her head held high in a courtroom in Avignon, France, on Thursday as the verdicts in the four-month rape trial of her ex-husband and 50 other men were read. Her image has become a symbol of female strength around the world, our critic writes.

Yes yes yes. Language matters.
Does the word "man" mean male or person?

I've been in several debates with others about Bible translations lately. I've argued that some translations (like the ESV) deliberately obscure when in Greek it was meant to be gender-neutral by using male pronouns.

They've pushed back.

I've always hated that phrase "fake it till you make it," but I recognize that the truth is there especially as an Indie Author. This job requires a kind of chutzpha that feels daunting to muster.

You will lose people on your journey towards wholeness. It's hard for a fractured self to stand in the glow of who you now are, especially if they are convinced that being fractured is the only way to be safe.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if all you accomplish this weekend is reading a riveting novel cover-to-cover whilst drinking multiple kettles of tea and consuming a scandalous amount of croissants, then you will have accomplished more than enough.

Is divorce & remarriage permitted in cases of abuse?

I often get people asking for an explanation of whether divorce and remarriage are okay, according to Scripture, in cases of abuse.

It breaks my heart that people think God would be happy trapping women in such marriages.

The super fun part about coming out on the internet as a writer who used to belong to a very conservative sect of christianity is that folks from your old life think they deserve answers from you.

Today I'm telling you a tender story---one I know is far from unique to me, and which has been reenacted on the national stage in many ways over the past few weeks.
