Amid calls to reform the humanitarian system, we shouldn't forget the decades of evidence showing what works — and what doesn’t. "What’s needed now is not fancy titles for timid reforms, but the courage to... implement the concrete changes we know would make a difference."

What do you call a room of think tankers with snacks & big questions? A retreat (& good time). In this troubling political moment, GPPi's 2025 retreat was an opportunity to step back, reflect & reconnect. We grappled with difficult questions but also made time for pizza, a picnic & a pub quiz!

🧐What would European “digital sovereignty” look like?

GPPi welcomed Dr. Francesca Bria (Stiftung Mercator), founder of the EuroStack initiative, to discuss.

EuroStack's goal? Build strategic autonomy, reduce foreign reliance & make Europe less vulnerable to cyberattacks and economic coercion.

Pooled funds can bring about a genuinely localized response.

GPPi's evaluation of the 2022-2024 Somalia drought response recommends more integrated & localized responses to urgent needs and country-based pooled funds to help reach all population groups. Read the full evaluation: gppi.net/somalia

📞"Thanks for calling the Feedback and Complaints Hotline. The number you have dialed is not in service."

GPPi's evaluation of the 2022-24 Somalia drought response shows a lack of accountability mechanisms. It recommends increasing transparency & engagement w/ affected people.

✂️ Cut the coordination clutter.

The inter-agency humanitarian evaluation of the drought response in Somalia in 2022-2024 suggests a need to streamline the humanitarian coordination structure, reducing coordination forums & meetings by at least half.

What happened to “stay and deliver”?

🔎During the 2022–24 drought in Somalia, security management emerged as a recurrent obstacle to an improved humanitarian response.

📃A review of humanitarian security management approaches is needed.

Humanitarian assistance saved tens, if not hundreds of thousands of lives in Somalia.

An estimated 74,000 people died in Somalia in 2022/2023 in the extended drought, but the death toll would have been much higher if not for the massive injection of humanitarian assistance gppi.net/2025/03/25/i...

Preventing wars is the EU's main foreign policy goal. How can algorithms and predictive models help?

For EUISS, @bressansar.bsky.social argues that expanding the EU's early warning toolbox is key in light of new conflict risks – as is strengthening early action. 👇
