The more I look at 16-year-old me's bedroom the more I can believe I was raised by parents who met when they were chairman and secretary of the Ilford Young Conservatives. Even the Pet Shop Boys poster is neatly pinned to the colour-coordinated noticeboard (next to Carol Decker, obvs.)
A terrifyingly-tidy 16-year-old's bedroom including a glass-fronted bookshelf protecting a copy of the Chidren's Britannica, a bureau for those important 16-year-old epistolary duties, a very tidy noticeboard and a globe.

Something more must be said, however, about that cold which was coming on, for it plays a part in the narrative that follows. I suffer at times from damp snivelling colds in the head, which descend upon me quite suddenly, turning me into a helpless and disgusting red-nosed and red-eyed animal feebly crying for still more handkerchiefs. Now my doctor had found some stuff for me that immediately dried up these colds. It did not cure them but it drove them, so to speak, from the surface. After a dose or two of it, I am no longer helpless and sodden, but am able to carry out - perhaps rather drearily - an average programme of work or play. In the car travelling north, I realised that a particularly nasty cold was threatening and that unless I grappled with it at once I should be unable to see anything for days and my journey would be wasted. So I began dosing myself with this mixture. (It contains belladonna; you take it before food; and for a few seconds, as a result of its drying-up properties, it makes you feel rather sick.) As the cold seemed to be of gigantic size and strength, I had to keep on dosing myself all the week. I was able to do all that I had arranged to do. Nobody knew that I had a cold. But my inside was the arena for a grand seven- day contest, Giant Cold v. Belladonna Mixture.

Circa 1985 I was clearly proud of this house I’d drawn in the Sketch Drawing program from the Acorn Electron Welcome tape but while we clearly had a VCR (JBC HR-7650EK, left) I didn’t think of recording it, so just grabbed a camera.
A beautiful house being displayed on our telly.

In That London. Tate Britain for Ithell Colquhoun exhibition, plus my first-time looks at Waterhouse’s _Lady of Shalott_ and (for Bristol interest) Henry Wallis’s _Chatterton_. Have also, to my chagrin, just experienced paying more than eight fecking quid for a pint of Brixton Atlantic.

Postcard: St Andrew-the-less, Chapel Row, Hotwells. This is the second church on the site following Dowry Chapel. Pevsner, 1958, says, "is an unforgiveable crime against the architecture of Dowry Square and chapel Row. Of no value either in its own Gothic forms. The spire is particularly nasty."

Several of us had arranged with the secretary to see that original members of the battalion to whom the price of the dinner was prohibitive were provided with free tickets. But this, he told me, had not worked very well; and my old platoon comrades confirmed this, too, when I asked about one or two men. They were so poor, these fellows, that they said they could not attend the dinner even if provided with free tickets because they felt that their clothes were not good enough. They ought to have known that they would have been welcome in the sorriest rags; but their pride would not allow them to come. (It was not a question of evening clothes; this dinner was largely for ordinary working men.) I did not like to… …think then how bad their clothes, their whole circumstances, were: it is not, indeed, a pleasant subject. They were with us, swinging along while the women and old men cheered, in that early battalion of Kitchener's New Army, were with us when kings, statesmen, general officers, all reviewed us, when the crowds threw flowers, blessed us, cried over us; and then they stood in the mud and water, scrambled through the broken strands of barbed wire, saw the sky darken and the earth open with red-hot steel, and came back as official heroes and also as young-old workmen wanting to pick up their jobs and their ordinary life again; and now, in 1933, they could not even join us in a tavern because they had not decent coats to their backs. We could drink to the tragedy of the dead; but we could only stare at one another, in pitiful embarrassment, over this tragi-comedy of the living, who had fought for a world that did not want them, who had come back to exchange their uniforms for rags. And who shall restore to them the years that the locust hath eaten?
