If you give working class people money, that money is going to go straight into their landlord’s pocket, until you fundamentally change the relationship between workers and housing!

This can’t lower rent, it always makes rents go up, because now the subsidy is calculated into the rate!

Here we go again. My brother has dual nationality, but he's white and straight, he's not who their nasty little code is insinuating. this is racially coded, unworkable nonsense playing to a base for whom the phrase 'how would that work in northern Ireland' is just an invitation to a sectarian rant.

After the missile attacks on boats, and immigration bullshit, this is the least subtle 'we're going to do some lynchings' announcement since the KKK pamphlet era. We need to turn quiet social media panic into full scale social action, and fast.
it does feel like an intense societal problem that the founder of palantir, the biggest survellience company, thinks like this

Trans people have always and will always be here.
A very important thread. When I was probably no more than 10, I saw this picture of the woman known as Harlow in the Philly Inquirer. A little babygay, I was shocked that such a glamour queen could live in my hometown and even more shocked to see her described as "a former man."

If you’re mad at trans athletes in women’s sports you’re mad about the wrong thing entirely.
Investigators say former coach Sean Gardner created videos showing close-up images of at least 10 minors naked or undressing, which they recovered from his computers last year while investigating reports of sexual abuse.

Gardner has pleaded not guilty and has been jailed pending trial.

In Part 1, we begin in Kampala’s “7 hills” to show how far from industry trans ugandans are living—as they try to avoid eviction.

there is no natural golden ratio of abled to disabled ppl, and no upper cap on what percentage of population can be disabled. if you sicken and injure enough ppl, and destroy accessibility of public life in a hostile and unsupported society so a wider and wider range are excluded, the skys the limit

The good thing about running Romancing the Gothic independently of any institution and supported only by people's donations is that I have no pressure to cowardice or capitulation.

Trans people are right there at the heart of RtG and if you don't like it, that's your problem. Not ours.
We still have some talk spaces for next year's Romancing the Gothic online talk series.

A reminder that Romancing the Gothic is explicitly trans-inclusive and our programme next year will be celebrating that in numerous talks. Join us.

Being trans disqualified you from being involved or having any say at all in the nyt coverage of trans people. That was true 5 years ago, and it’s true today.

It’s the definition of prejudice.
Ever wonder why the New York Times abandoned balance and impartiality to lead an old-fashioned newspaper crusade against trans equal rights?

Fascinated to know what empire I represent as a trans person? Can I choose? Medieval Persia has great aesthetics for gender bending weirdness.
It's fascinating how "the transes went too far" is a kind of floating timeline thing, always placed in the relatively recent past. e.g. Helen Lewis here dating the "over-reach" to after Bostock (June 2020). But she was already decrying the "imperial over-reach of... trans activists" in Jan 2019.

I think it says a lot about how our attitude to welfare has changed that the Christmas Bonus was brought in by Barbara Castle so that even the poorest families could afford a turkey and a few presents and now removing it would prompt protests and rising it would give the Telegraph an aneurism.
Remember, the UK is a country which has been paying a £10 Christmas bonus to pensioners since the 1970s, and yes, it was £10 in the 1970s and is still £10 today, and no, obviously it would be political suicide to take this increasingly meaningless sum away.

must emphasize again that the government and courts have not only attacked trans rights built in the last 15 years and that were *explicitly envisaged as part of the Equality Act they are using to attack them* but forcing a rollback of *decades-old* policies by individual groups.
Stuck on this gutting sentence on the Women’s Institute decision. For young people it’s watching the world close to them before they’ve had a shot at life, for older women it’s watching half a century of progress vanish. Either way it’s grossly, unbearably cruel.
