My wife loves blackbirds, so I made one for her. Inspired by the fantastic wooden birds made by @curiostudio with my own take on a stand. I had plans for adding eye and beak details but I couldn't get them to work in a way I was happy with, and I ran out of time. Happy birthday wifey.

This is a special bowl. While visiting New Zealand last year I met up with another woodturner who gifted me some NZ wood and a rough-turned bowl for me to take home and finish. I hope I did it justice...

Well that's the outside balanced. Skeletor approves.

A cabin in the woods.
These sold out almost instantly at Christmas - I'll be making more.

Playing with my logo design. I was aiming for a 50's jazz album cover.

For shallow 'open' forms I like to make the rim to fit my thumb's proximal phalanx and undercut the inside to fit the pad of the distal phalanx - it makes for a very natural feeling spot to comfortably & securely grip the bowl. Function over form? Form over function?

Working on a little commission this evening. Monday is looming. Boooooo. 😒

You'll never guess what I'm making.

She's a whopper! 15x5", made from ash felled due to dieback disease - it'll hold a whole lotta fruit.

More work in progress ... the joys of turning closed forms! This large & deep bowl is only very slightly closed, but it's still enough to capture the shavings. It's made from a large conifer (leylandii?) so it's very smelly - not in a bad way, just very strong.

I don't core open-form bowls nearly as much as I should, which is pretty stupid, as it's not difficult to do and it obviously reduces the volume of wood that's converted to shavings - and you get (at least) a 2nd bowl out of it. I'm using the Woodcut Tools bowl saver here - a great piece of kit.

Finished another of the woodland cabins just when I heard the news about David Lynch's death. I'm a big Twin Peaks fan and most things Lynch (although I've not yet seen Mulholland Drive!). Is this the Log Lady's cabin or maybe the black lodge? We should check for BOB.
