yeah, i think that discussion will hinge on whether we think virality is the important part. ICE watch and confrontation also goes wide often! spectacle and direct action aren't mutually exclusive imo.

most of us don't naturally think tactically. sharing tactical thought and critique across actions, struggles, and movements is good and useful. we should ask ourselves if our actions meet our aims and adjust our course if they don't.
organizers have these discussions again and again, they're vital

i don't think that criticism of an individual tactic can then be applied to a larger movement.

okay so this is in response to a post where Talia flat out says that the criticism of people wearing inflatable costumes on an empty street corner rather in wearing inflatable costumes in direct confrontation to ICE is a bad tactic and that that criticism is NOT about 50501.

this is a Graeber quote that lives rent free in my head but that book also talks a lot about silly *and* confrontational tactics

i understand what that means. people seem to be able to speak critically about tv with a lot more ease than other media, idk why that is.

one of my friends, when talking about music, really values cohesion and will often say that an album "sounds like a mixtape". increasingly i think people i talk to don't think about albums at all! i know a few people who talk about games where you can "hang out in a world" and i still don't think

i was going to say "this isn't me, i have completely normal habits about media"
except that i try to avoid any and all critical writing about a work before i engage with it so i can avoid other opinions shaping my reactions

right, like uh:
A: "i really liked spending time in this environment but found the difficulty of the combat distracting"
being read by B as:
"i like scenery and DON'T like difficulty and these two things are in MORTAL CONFLICT"

oh interesting, so it's more like "actually the work DOES achieve y, you just missed it" without ever really engaging with the frame of x?

i guess in that framing we treat "i wanted x and this is y" as a failure to adequately address what i think a work actually is or does

i guess i don't see a tension between "i accept the work as it is" and "i have criticisms about what i think the work is trying to do"

sometimes i don't even know what a work *is* trying to tell me, which is frustrating on its own, and i think that a work's refusal or coyness or confusion or whatever can be used to achieve a variety of effects as well

i agree w Cara that there's no point in retreating to "matters of taste" too readily, developing and interrogating your taste is enriching!
