This is extremely true. My first time at a fur con, I am very masc in meatspace, and I walked around wearing a con badge of a feminine fursona with a feminine name and nobody batted an eye. Some people even encouraged me about it.
Furry is used by MANY as a safe space to experiment with gender.

For most people in modern society, it's not enough to say "I'm [X]" to be accepted as such (despite the efforts of some queer theorists). You need to perform. Whereas assertion is the only requirement you need in furry circles to be accepted as you wish to be seen.
