Today's version of The Colbert Report would have to be a parody channel of all the "investigate the radical left" Andy Ngos of the world: breathlessly taking gopros into goth bars or farmers markets and acting shocked and horrified about the existence of longstanding subcultures. "Hello, FBI?!!"

The problem is most social media can’t decide if it’s a broadcast medium or a “friends connecting with friends” platform.

Facebook, at one point, had a “only friends of friends can find me in search” setting. But OG Twitter was unequivocally a broadcast medium.

They need to pick one path or other.
They should add interaction settings to control the conditions for when someone can follow you. Bluesky’s promise of controlling what you can see would feel so fresh if it also let you properly control who you are associated with. This was the cardinal sin of social media, imo, and not algorithms

If I hear anything consistently, it's that the teenagers who get sucked into the Andrew Tate bullshit are almost always getting a dose of similar ideology at home from their dad.

Makes me think the issue isn't with "American teens and Tate" so much as it it's "American dads and their sons"

It’s so important to not let yourself become bitter or disheartened or cynical. To not let the news of the world break your spirit. Because I’m already doing that. It’s my thing. Find your own, stop copying me.

People don’t always realize the amount of guerrilla social work that is required of booksellers & (especially) librarians these days until they witness it themselves. Even non-readers equate libraries & bookstores with safe havens, & they’re NOT wrong. 1/?

My 191cm father once traveled to the Netherlands for business. Came back across the pond, declaring “they’re all my height!” in amazement.
Average male height across Europe.

The Dutch truly rise above! 🇳🇱

Saw a post on TikTok about Columbia taking away degrees backfiring, and it made me realize - taking Degrees is way as punishment demonstrates how these institutions believe that their mission is conferring privilege and not providing education.

one of the most important things to learn, if you're out there doing things:

you don't get to talk about it.

you don't get to brag about it, you don't get to tell your friends, you don't get drinks bought for you in the bar off the story.

it's *always* shut the fuck up friday

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source.

Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

Personally, I think this puts too much weight on the MIC (yeah, 20+y WoT and beyond, but I think they’re more pawn than queen), but it’s otherwise a good breakdown.

sorry but like, this isn't right?
iso 8601 is a spec for text representations of datetime. it doesn't have an epoch and certainly not one that is 1850.
85 cobol does have dates stored from an epoch, but it's either 1601 or 1582
When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted.
Yet somehow Musk isn't.

Doctor Who taught me never to be cowardly or cruel. That being a clever trickster can beat violence. To surround myself with companions and never travel alone.

And to have jelly babies, as a treat.
Mr Rogers and Sesame Street taught me love, kindness, compassion, and empathy. Star Trek taught me to dream of and aspire to help create a better and more diverse world. Star Wars and Tolkien taught me to fight for freedom, even in the face of overwhelming odds and great evil.

Remember. It’s never:

We fight for (these people) because maybe we’re more at risk if we don’t.

No more Niemölling.

We fight because they are coming for anyone.

Every single person matters.

Each and every human being’s life and safety is worth the fight.
