Feel free to ask me questions about Virginia native plants!

A monarch butterfly was "born" this morning in my yard! First thing it will do is eat the egg shell.

Native plant enthusiast: "I've got cats on my Zizea! Hope this one isn't embarrassed to have a pic with its frass!"

Translation: "I've got black swallowtail caterpillars on my Golden Alexanders (Zizea aurea)! Hope this one isn't embarrassed to have a pic with its poop!"

I put a few pieces of native Sedum (Sedum ternatum) around these very large stepping stones a few years ago. They have filled in so nicely!

Looks like the large bullfrog I saw a month ago in my little pond is still around! Of course, I didn't label it, so I have no way of knowing if it is the same frog!

Dutchman's breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) is a real cutie! Just a few inches tall. Blooming today, will be dormant in early May. It's only above ground for about 2 months!

I divided my bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) last summer while it was dormant. The dense flowers are the original area, the other photos are new areas!

Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica). They start blooming almost as soon as they pop out of the ground! It will just be a few more days. It's exciting to see the buds!

So many exciting plants today! This is Aromatic Sumac (Rhus aromatica). The straight species is tall (6-12'). There is also a popular cultivar called Gro-Low (not as desirable for wildlife as a straight species) that stays very short - about 1.5-2' for me.

Here is a picture from last year of a some of the pollinators. They can get very pollen covered!
March 16, 2025 at 1:50 AM
My Prairie Willow (Salix humilis) is starting to bloom! Soon, it will be covered with early pollinators, and they will be covered with pollen. It is a short shrub - 6' or so in my yard, and getting a bit wider each year.

My bloodroot is blooming (Sanguinaria canadensis)! This clump is more sheltered than other parts of my yard, and blooms first. Spring is here!

I'm working on the host list for the 2025 Richmond area Native Plant Garden Open House! I'd love to have a few more hosts. If you have a native garden and are interested, let me know. It is fun, rewarding, and greatly appreciated by visitors. (My email address is on the picture)
