literature education has essentially, consistently failed. all these years after The Curtains Are Blue, you still see people posting shit like this, falsely imagining lit classes as some struggle between the meaningless intent of the author and bullshit of the teacher

The Porter is a funny drunk bloke I lobbed in to cover a costume change!

Which is...?
SHAKESPEARE:

TEACHER:

SHAKESPEARE:
Yes.
TEACHER:
But Mr Shakespeare... your Porter scene was a question in a past GCSE paper...
We need to analyse it so the kids don't end up failing their exams...

Yes, and I'm just suggesting you should analyse Bollocks People Say on the Internet instead, so they don't end up painting flags on roundabouts.

Some people just seem to want to eliminate all potential sources of discomfort, no matter how small or innocuous, from their lives. Fiction allows you to model experiencing big emotions in a safe controlled setting, and I just don't think any good comes of avoiding that to this degree
A key point in Fahrenheit 451 is that books were banned because they made people depressed and uncomfortable. The novel's protagonist, Montag, is taken into custody after he reads a poem that makes a woman cry because she realizes the emptiness of her life.
