👉 The discourse and actions emanating from EU states and institutions reflect a departure from the fundamental norms, practices, and institutions that the EU has tried to embody, undoing the justifications for its existence.

The fanatical support that Ursula von der Leyen has given to Israel in waging a war of extermination and genocide against the Palestinian people serves as one of the most catastrophic illustrations of the degeneration of the rule of law within the EU, and a total disregard for universal norms.

This approach helps identify and assess the factors that shape the choice for foreign policy options, but also trends and tendencies, including, surprisingly, crass unilateralism—call it solo diplomacy—within the European Commission, usually regarded as the guardian of the rule of law.

This piece addresses this anomaly by theorising European foreign policy beyond the EU, allowing for a systematic assessment of what member states do together and separately.

This is an anomaly that hinders a proper understanding of both the challenges and significance of EU foreign policy, and European foreign policy as a whole.

The disproportional focus on EU foreign policy conflates collective action of member states with their collective weight, and obscures the autonomy that member states enjoy in selecting from a range of foreign policy options (e.g. unilateralism, bilateralism, minilateralism, and multilateralism).
