First time at the Te Apārangi Royal Society Honours and Awards ceremony…. Anticipatory congrats to the awardees and the vibrant research community which is struggling in the face of gross funding cuts from the current government.

Good to see my union’s flags were among those marching insisting the govt my sanction Israel today in Tāmaki
(Photo not mine as I wasn’t yet back in the country)
Thousands demand sanctions against Israel in Auckland www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

A treat to finish a long day at work attending a fabulous reflexive and critical professorial inaugural from colleague Prof Rachel Simon-Kumar. We must embrace the good at the university! I feel reignited in passion given the urgent need for feminist research (given the threats)

And now I find they HAVE been used at my uni... the orientation is depressingly familiar, but the confirmation is depressing AF!!!

Another small action against the horror: I’m doing the @medicalaidpal.bsky.social #Stride4Palestinians fundraiser 107kms - Jerusalem to Gaza - over the next few weeks.

Yeah. It is terrifying. He can play populism/popularity politics - which he’s always done - but these things are so deeply harmful to individuals and society. Meanwhile the sky is still “woke” 🏳️‍⚧️

One of the death-by-a-1000-cuts things that make this disabled academic weep in in-capacity.
It's time to apply for study leave. Down the uni web warren to look for the application form. Leave policy comes up, so I go there (cos, logically, the form WILL be linked)... Except of course it IS NOT!

I’m so gutted that I’m sick and so cannot / will not join the strike physically today. I have instead emailed the VC and director of HR to express my support for strike and my distress and shame about working for an institution that does not value staff enough to pay a living wage!

super excited to see a photo of the actual book that is the Polish translation of @vicclarke.bsky.social and my @sagepub.com book Thematic Analysis: A Practical Guide! Sadly I have zero words of Polish!

Amidst all the attacks on gender and sexuality that are ramping up - and as we’ve seen on pride events here (and noting the immediate ‘but what about’ anti trans ‘responses’ on First Up on RNZ this am), the sky tower glows. And must feel like a big FU. Happy Pride 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Great reminder to all UoA staff (who are TEU/union members) that our university is offering a pitiful pay increase (last year’s bargaining) that is not even keeping up with inflation. Just another example of the devaluing of knowledge (production)

NZers - the updated covid booster is *finally* approved and available (and still free for those eligible - a bit of a shock given the current govt’s approach)
Got my 💉 today 👍🏼

What makes people see a sign like this on a big wheelie bin and decide (repeatedly) that while it states “paper only” what actually belongs in there is: cardboard (explicitly excluded), plastic, dust and other dirt, dry food detritus. Etc. I despair of a human future

Struggling with energy and concentration at the end of the first week back after a not-long-enough break - so treating self to a lie down and starting to read @margaretprice.bsky.social book Crip Spacetime…

One of my favourite (2-yearly) conferences - International Society of Critical Health Psychology - will be in Galway at the start of July next year... Great speakers, great community, great chance to learn what's at the cutting edge of (critical) health psychology!

Wouldn’t it be nice if the UoA valued staff as much as they value a very fancy and v expensive new rec centre… and paid wages that are living wages, fair, and keep up with inflation #TEU #WeAreTheUniversity
