What I like about the examples is how two approaches of protagonist can create a compelling character.
Bioware's KOTOR and Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 have blank protagonists, however, the writing of the other characters mould a personality to them that we see an in depth character.

There's definitely exceptions (KOTOR, Disco Elysium, etc), but so many of the times I see "choices matter", what I see is a bland protagonist who is a player cipher rather than a character, and the plot is designed around allowing the protagonist can do anything, so the narrative is unfocused
