After 6 months of fieldwork in Bougainville, I'm ready to embark on leg 1 of my #NoFly journey to Germany. Travelling by ship, train, coach over 27,000km, I'll emit ~535kg of CO2, 10 times less than flying. This decision cost me my job, but I still think it was the right thing to do. 1/

I wish in a few years we could see the same mobilisation for the fight against climate change as what is now happening for Palestine. In a not too distant future, people living in Gaza are certain to have to leave their land because of sea level rise, unless we stop emissions.

I asked @ggrimalda.bsky.social if the villages he visits in Papua New Guinea have refrigeration, while I was thinking through a similar question recently. They generally do not. They catch fish and eat them the same day. About a billion people live at that level.

Day 0 of my new #NoFly journey from Italy to Papua New Guinea. Just collected my visa to Russia. I'll cut my CO2 emissions by ~10 & will travel with the hidden majority of the world, those who remain stuck to the ground. I'll complete my research on social cohesion+adaptation to climate change.

In Italy, we call them ‘water bombs’. They are sudden, intense downpours. Last night, 74 mm of rain fell in Rimini, Romagna, in just a few hours. That is equivalent to about one and a half months of rainfall. The wind was blowing at 120 km/h. Video cr: @UnaGiorno

Has Russia conquered the US?
The presidency that putin dreams for Ukraine is like the current US presidency: subdued, obedient, remissive.
Press conferences are dictators' monologues and putin is let serenading about Alaska being Russian soil.
Extraordinary.

In the scorching heat of this summer fourth heatwave in Milan, I walked around @Feltrinelli_ bookshops. I was glad to see my book "A fuoco/Zooming" is still proposed in the "New reads" section after more than 2 months since publication. It's a sign the book is going well.

‘Struck,’ reads the post in which the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) announces the killing of @aljazeera.com journalist Anas al-Sharif. As if Anas were a character in a video game and his killing permitted the access to the next stage in a "Candy Crush saga". RIP🧵

I am convinced that non-violent civil resistance is the best way to end the massacre in Gaza, and the brave guys by #StandingTogether @OmdimBeyachad yesterday showed that this may really be the way.
That's the vision of the future I want! I am with you!

Well done guys!
The best way to end the massacre in Gaza is through non-violent civil disobedience!
I am with you! 🙏👏
Watch: We disrupted the live broadcast of Big Brother Israel last night to call for an end to the annihilation in Gaza and abandonment of the hostages because we can’t continue with routine right now! There can’t be business as usual! (1/2)

“I’ve never spoken to an Arab. I’ve only seen Palestinians from checkpoints monitors. I was in Gaza until 2 weeks ago. In Gaza you turn off your mind and do your job. Or you freak out. But then, you come across Palestinians. And you realize they are just like you.

A sudden flashflood hit Dharali village in India. This is not an emergency, it's not a new normal, it's something that will get worse until we stop our toxic dependence from fossil fuels & stop meat-consumption-led deforestation.

Israeli PM Netanyahu is reportedly planning offensive to fully occupy Gaza, which would be disastrous. According to a 30 July poll by Yossi Tatika, the majority of Israeli citizens *oppose* this plan.

One of the justifications given by the Israeli government for the siege of Gaza is that Gazans are responsible for Hamas' actions because they voted them into power in 2006 and because they actively support them. Nothing could be further from the truth.
