Really interested in improving health? Ignore processing and simply eat more flavanols. In contrast to processing, there's overwhelming scientific consensus that they are beneficial - and even an RCT showing a reduction in disease risk (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35294962/).

And it's easy and cheap!
We don't know that ultra-processed foods are bad for us. Some studies even show they might help weight loss.

Seems to be quite topical: why I completely disagree with NOVA and UPF

The food industry reformulated foods - because public health experts wanted less fat and less sugars, but consumers wanted to eat something that did not resemble cardboard.

That's bad, says Professor van Tulleken:

Why can't UK newspapers call out the key problem with UPF?

It's ideology - not science.

Can we really trust results from clinical trials in nutrition?

RCTs are seen as the gold standard in research - but "not all that glitters is gold" ... And there are some unique aspects that we have explored in a brand-new paper. Read on🧵

Flavanols should be used for cardiovascular prevention - because they can reduce blood pressure and improve vascular function.

There have been many discussions about NOVA - mainly about the fact that it is simply not fit for purpose by combining foods like infant formula, soft drinks, coco-pops and fish fingers in the same category.

Why not join and shape the effort? Everyone interested in public health should do so.
Classic case of appropriation. When Big Tobacco realised it couldn't compete with science, it starting buying scientists.

Same now with NOVA.

Scientists involved in this little heist have happily taken money from McDonald's, McCain, Nestlé...

It will fail

🍽️ What did you eat yesterday?
Breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner—do you remember everything? How about the portion sizes? Was that cucumber sandwich 100g or 150g?

This might seem like trivia, but for nutrition research, it’s a HUGE challenge. Here's why 👇

Fascinating - these are exactly the tactics used by @stuartgillespie.bsky.social and Chris van Tulleken against me: vexatious FOI requests, ridiculing in social media and magazine articles.

The problem of the #UPF crowd: they don't want food to be cheap, they want it to be expensive.

An industrial lemon cake with a 4-day shelf-life would be incredibly expensive.

(And none of the ingredients in the industrial one harm health.)

I’m a dietitian….

- I eat chocolate most days.
- I can’t tell you my macros or how many calories I eat.
- I rely on ultra processed foods like shop bought bread and cereal bars.
- We sometimes have a quick meal like a bought stuffed pasta with a sauce.
- I drink wine.

Life is about balance.
