Here’s THE #1 of my TOP 10 METAL ALBUMS OF 2024 🎸🤘 it was love at first listen, and has since become one of my favorite metal albums of all time.

The album cover art for Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere (2024). I already wrote many many paragraphs about this album, which you can check out in my full Top 100 Albums list, which I’ll post tomorrow! In short, this album is a captivating, mind-melting, fever dream of a space rock / prog rock / death metal record. It’s a love letter to metal and all of its far stylistic reaches, told through intense lyrical and dissonant instrumental passages. Oh, and throw in some synth solos for good measure.

This is a wild ride of some of the most insane instrumental decisions and hardest-hitting riffs ever.

The album cover art for Black Pyramid - The Paths of Time Are Vast (2024). This was an absolute odyssey of a stoner metal album, arguable a cooler 12+ year comeback than Sleep’s “The Sciences” (2018)

The album cover art for Missouri Executive Order 44 - Salt Sermon (2024). Bike helmet-donning MOE44 shows promise for being a class underground noisy hardcore/sludge metal outfit. This record is quite insane, probably my #11 of the year.

The album cover art for Opeth - The Last Will and Testament (2024). Love me a good concept album, and this is a refreshing approach for a band I’ve had mixed feelings about since I first heard them ~7 years back. Other members of the band would put this in their top 3… do with that info what you will lol

The album cover art for Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Nell’ Ora Blu (2024). This was in my Top 10 overall albums of the year, but this isn’t really a metal or rock album at all. It’s a horrorsynth experience unlike anything else, truly a different listening experience from most albums I have ever heard.

9. Alcest - Les Chants de l'Aurore

The album cover for Alcest - Les Chants de l'Aurore (2024), the #9 album of my Top 10 Metal Albums of 2024. This album is somehow one of their most cohesively consistent records to date, going for a more tranquil and ethereal sound on this one. It very much matches the album cover art, which features a beautiful sunset (over tall grass and slender trees that remind of a southern hemisphere - style climate), a nude long-haired person playing a long thin woodwind instrument, and eight majestic cranes following the person (some of the cranes have their wings spanned out and their heads in the air). Most of the colour is an orange-y red/brown gold and the vegetation and birds have a dull pale teal/patina colour that contrasts beautifully with the sunset.
