My gut feeling is the same as Carole's.
As a European, I always accepted the one-liner narratives about "checks and balances" regarding the U.S. system.
But seeing how the U.S. justice system failed to deal with Trump while it could, partly due to sabotage by the Supreme Court, convinced me..

Final thoughts today. My conclusion is that many in the US have no idea what's coming for it. Can't/won't believe. 'The institutions will hold'. 'There's always the courts.' Let's hope so. But the plan is shock & awe. Think high-profile scapegoats, a climate of fear, institutional cowardice.
NEW: The great Trump-Musk crackdown is coming. And it will hit hard & fast. Journalists will be first. But everyone else is next.
