Opinion | Chechen voices are being silenced, even those abroad
Until the fear of collective punishment ends, even the simple act of speaking publicly is a privilege that most Chechens don’t have.

An important The National Interest article on how Georgian Dream has turned Georgia into a key sanctions-evasion corridor fueling Russia’s war economy, while aligning with Moscow, Beijing & Tehran and escalating domestic repression.

1/ GD plans to further tighten legislation regarding protests. In particular, it will be necessary to notify a state body in order to hold a protest “in places of public movement.”

I know several Chechens committed to the cause and they have told me some out-of-this-world horrors about the dangers they face even in Europe, not to mention their families and relatives back in Chechnya.

We could at least share the article to make it known.

The Georgian Dream regime does absolutely nothing to release Mamuka.

Maybe I could manage to pass on birthday wishes to him, since there is address provided for communicating with him.

Let’s support Mamuka!

Today is Mamuka Gatserelia’s birthday.

He’s imprisoned for life in Russia, taken as a hostage during the Siege of Azovstal.

He had to flee Russian occupation from Abkhazia, Georgia… fought Russians in Ukraine, and is currently their hostage.

It seems like any protest, including those on pavements, will now have to be approved by the Georgian Dream.

We do have a history of rendering their laws ineffective, though.

Lasha Shergelashvili, the key witness in the BBC research into the chemicals use in Georgia, is by the way investigated for the forged "mass weapons confiscation" case related to October 4.

The BBC investigation began 6-7 months ago.

1/ Update: The bill has now been published.

Under a new bill GD may approve this week, protest organizers must give the Ministry of Internal Affairs 5 days' notice to hold rallies on public roads. A protest in Tbilisi has been ongoing for 375 days.

4. The tight competition, coupled with highly rumoured future abolishing of the United National Exams puts enrollment in the hands of universities - hello personal connections, nepotism and corruption, as it was before 2005. The Georgian Dream will only encourage that.

2. According to previous changes, there will be a "one city - one faculty" policy, which means even the university will be decided for you. You want to be a lawyer? Great, no other option than Tbilisi State University;

The Georgian Dream boasts it made higher education free.

In reality, they:

1. Made it mandatory to only list a single program at a single university, as opposed to the previous system of ranking your priorities. This means much less options for students, and much lower enrollment overall;

We were poisoned with Camite (Bromobenzyl cyanide) during last year’s protests. And just a few months ago, GD froze the bank accounts of NGOs that bought face masks for coworkers and protesters to reduce the harm.

Apparently, according to GD, we weren’t poisoned enough.
1/ Today, the BBC published an investigation stating that, in November–December 2024, a toxic compound used during World War I, Camite, was used to disperse demonstrators at protests in Georgia.
