Sunday sketch #492

A few weeks ago, I shared a block-based design featuring alternating blocks that used straight lines and curves in complementary ways. I'm revisiting that concept this week, using some chunky shapes from a while back.

Finished quilt: Fizz

A while back, Tara Glastonbury of Stitch & Yarn invited me to contribute Moonshot to her next quilt exhibition, called 'Ahead of the Curve'. I'm always thrilled to be invited to participate in any of Tara's exhibitions, so of course I said yes! Then more recently, she asked if…

Sunday sketch #491

I made a quilt recently (which I'll share in a few weeks' time) that used loads of wide curves – the same size/shape that I used in my quilts Blue Wave, Whirlwind and Quattro. Basically a 7" (finished) drunkard's path unit with a 3.5" (finished) drunkard's path cut out of it. A…

More sawtooth stars this week, since I'm building on last week's sketch. It's essentially the same underlying design, just coloured differently. Let me show you how I got here from there!

Would you believe that I designed this week's sketch and drafted this blog post almost two weeks ago, and only realised last Wednesday that the basic design is the same as Sunday sketch #440 (posted last December)?! I always knew it would happen eventually... I've copied myself!…

Sunday sketch #488

One of the quilts I'm making at the moment combines traditional quilt blocks (nine patches and rail-fence sashing blocks) with circles. It's a funny mix of old and new, prints and solids... it's a way to use up fabric from my stash while trying out a new design approach. At the…

It's a funny mix of old and new, prints and solids... it's a way to use up fabric from my stash while trying out a new design approach. At the same time, it's been prompting me to add new or unexpected shapes into designs that were otherwise languishing.

I don't usually do holiday-themed designs, but I couldn't help it this week. The basic flower unit in last week's sketch reminded me of a pumpkin, and with Halloween coming up... it felt like good timing to play around with the idea a little more.

I always seem to have one or two unrealised ideas in my head when it comes to quilt designing – vague concepts or hazy pictures that float around my brain but won't quite land on paper (or screen). One of these ideas is for an Australian native plants/flowers quilt – I'm…

One of these ideas is for an Australian native plants/flowers quilt – I'm determined to design a modern quilt based on banksias or wattles one of these days!

It's not too hard to see the common element in this week's and last week's sketches: that dark double-layer economy block with smaller angled squares on its top, bottom and sides. Now there are just more of them!

It's been a minute since I shared a series of related sketches. This week's (and at least the next two weeks') sketches feature a recurring motif that I've been calling (in my head) the 'robot'. Even though it doesn't really look anything like a robot.

Splat! The slightly irregular edges on this week's sketch remind me a little of a liquid splashing onto a solid surface – or those slow-motion videos of crown splashes.

Finished quilt: Tectonic

Every now and then I'll create a design and then hoard it for a bit while I decide if I want to make it myself. Sometimes I do (see Sunday sketch #441 / Moonshot, or #432, for example), and sometimes I don't (too many to count!). This time I did 🙂 Meet Tectonic.

This week's sketch makes use of zig-zag edges to give the impression that adjacent blocks are slotting into each other. I've used that effect before, but I think this is the best example! It's definitely my favourite, anyway.

This week I'm reusing a little shape from two recent Sunday sketches (#469 and #470) – basically a set of four kite-in-a-square units where the kite's point doesn't quite meet the square's corner.
