Loved my first session with my geography trainees last week. Some brilliant freebies for them from @geographicalassoc.bsky.social, brand new subject knowledge booklets I worked on last year, and new handouts to reduce their cognitive load. Fridays are the best 👌

One thing I've noticed from my review of the department this term is that students are unclear as to what they need to do to improve. So post mocks Y10s today, colour coded the exam qs to identify areas of improvement.

Y11 spent some time today analysing an 8 mark exam question. They used three colours to spot the key criteria and examiner would look for: chains of reasoning, key terms and TLAG (thinking like a geographer) 🤔

We have an assessment week where students need to work in silence after they've finished their assessment. And their general knowledge about countries is so poor that I thought a profile like this would begin to improve it. The postcard is part of their extension task.

I was *so* delighted that a Y9 student chose to write her postcard about Nigeria in her native language of Yoruba. It showed just how important it is that we include the voices of people from the countries we teach. Esp as I made such a rookie error with the national dish 🤦🏼♀️ (Now corrected)

Really try to build up the knowledge of our students so Y11 geographers all now have their own set of flashcards to take home. Reducing the cognitive load and providing them with the correct knowledge based on wording from the spec #eduqasb #gcsegeography

Fantastic session this morning with the SWTT trainees looking at literacy in geography, the use of schemas, and what an A Level geography curriculum should have (linked back to curriculum ideologies from our 1st session) 🤓
