Fantastic turnout for our Duke of Burgundy workshop for land advisors in Dorset. So much interest in saving this lovely butterfly which is down to 6 small colonies in Dorset. Funded thanks to Farming in Protected Landscapes grant with Hilfield Friary and @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Baikal Teal still present today on Chesil/Fleet shoreline. 3 Scaup in embayment. Probably all viewable from tank traps but note there is strictly no access along the beach beyond the fence there. Swannery Grounds now closed for winter. @joestockwell.bsky.social @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social

Ringing returns well down at the Bill with the day's only noteworthy event amongst just 17 new birds being the ringing of the two Chiffchaffs required to first equal and then overtake a record: more Chiffchaffs have now been ringed during this September and October than in any previous whole year!

Still hope for us yet! There might have been as few as 3 in our county so far this autumn. 🤞🤞
Wow! It was looking like a poor year for Yellow-browed Warbler but that has changed in the last week with reports well above average for the time of year. Still some way to go beat the all time record week in Oct 2016, when it appeared on 8.5% of all complete lists

After decades of decline, Little Tern has enjoyed a strong 2025 breeding season at colonies across England, offering hope for the species' recovery:
Encouraging 2025 breeding results for England's Little Terns
Little Tern has shown encouraging signs of recovery in 2025, with record numbers fledging at key English colonies. Conservation work by the RSPB and partners, including habitat restoration, predator control and community engagement, has helped boost breeding success. Despite ongoing threats, these results offer renewed hope for one of the UK's rarest and most threatened seabirds.

1/ Using a combination of intensive field study of nesting birds and extensive relative abundance data from @bbs-birds.bsky.social in the south-west and east of England, this study shows that inadequate reproductive success is a potential cause for the declines of the much loved Spotted Flycatcher.
